My two and half year old loves to eat satsumas and tangerines for small snacks but I find they go straight through him and lead to unpleasent accidents. My health visitor said it's ok for him to eat them at this stage but couldn't think why he would have this type of reaction. Has this happened to anyone else? should I just wait until he is a bit older?

I nearly died the first time my 2 year old ate a Kiwi fruit.

Was considering rushing him into the doctors until i realised what had happened.

It flew straight through him, and out the other end!

He seemed to grow out of this and enjoys a lot of fresh fruit in his diet.

Sounds like a slight intolerance. Limit how much and how often the child eats these. Try stopping one for a week. Then switch. See if it's both of them or just one or the combination of the two. My son loved egg drop soup at age 2 but we found he had terrible accidents. We limited how much he ate. Later, we found he has an intolerance to egg yolks. He can only have one a day if he eats them every day. He still has the intolerance and he is almost 21 years old.

Yep...My kids still do that when I give them a lot of fruits: oranges, tangerines, apples. So, to counteract that problem, I also feed them bananas and I give them whole wheat crackers to go with a few Cheddar cheese cubes. Perhaps you could try the fruits in the morning, and then the whole wheat crackers(I use "Wheat Thins Whole Grain") and the cheddar cheese cubes or sticks in the early afternoon. Serve him plenty of fiber in addition to the fruits and you'll see an immediate change in his bowel habits, and it will be for the better.

they are a good alternative to all the sweets and chocolate that most children like to eat, the problem you have is that they are a good diuretic,"help to loosen bowels when constipated" just monitor the amount of them he eats per day, try him with other fruits, and vary the amounts he consumes per day, note the effects they have on his system, and adjust with other foods, some have the opposite effect of the fruit, it is basically a balanced diet just monitor the affects and don't introduce too many new things in one day as this will make it harder for you to keep track of what foods have what effect, good luck it can get annoying sometimes but the results are well worth the effort.

This sounds healthy but it sounds as if you need to switch snacks. Experiment around with different fruits.

He may be allergic to citrus or even all fruit. Try giving just one or two bites and see if it still happens. Does it still happen with berries or apples?

For me personally, I only have to eat strawberries to have a digestive track reaction.

I think you shouldn't buy these fruits and keep them off it for a while.. same thing happened to my brother when he was younger with oranges. Why do you want him to keep having these accidents for the sake of him liking it? If he was allergic to chocolate but liked it, would you still let him eat it?

Citrus fruits -- such as oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines -- are very acidic and can cause stomach upset or diarrohea in babies or young children.
Cut back the citrus fruits and give more pears/apples/grapes.

I would wait a few more months and try a really small amount.
Experiment with other items to see if the same response.
Good luck.
