She's been to the dr..there is nothing they can do because all she has is a cough no other symptoms..like I said she gets a cough like this every year..I'm just wondering about how to make her more comfortable at night and best over the counter cough meds.

Most of the cough syrups on the "over the counter" market contain either Guaifenesin (like robitussin) or Dextromethorphan (like delsym), neither does a great job of suppressing a particularly troublesome cough. Often when the cough occurs at the same time as nasal congestion, treating the congestion can go a long way toward making them feel better and assisting with the cough. Diphenhydramine (benadryl) Pseudephedrine (sudafed) can be quite helpful. I know it sounds cliche now but make sure to encourage fluid intake as this helps more than anything to thin the secretions that are causing much of the problem. Having recurring symptoms each year is a common complaint but should not necessarily be cause for alarm as children pass these respiratory illnesses back and forth at this time of year. Avoid the temptation to be too aggressive about treating these symptoms however annoying they may be: please do not be tempted to use prescription suppressants (like codeine or similar) as these, or even overdoses of the over the counter meds, can cause them to stop breathing and certainly avoid any exposure to cigarette smoke.
Good luck and good health,

A cough with no other symptoms-could be teething (all though docs swear this won't cause runny noses and coughing-my little guy goes through this and every mom I talk to has had it happen). The other thing could be allergies. I would try Robotusin for the cough (just the cough formula) and keep up the humidifier. If coughing is worse at night it may be drainage from the nose, so you may want to cut back some on the Vicks as it will make her nose run more (and drain back down the throat possibly). If you still have this issue after another 2 weeks, talk to your doctor about allergies. My son and I both have bad coughs this time of year-we were put on a Rx allergy treatment and both of us cleared up.

My daughter was perscribed delsym but with your child being 2 you can give her robitussin or even dimatap..alot of the medicins like that have directions for 2 yr olds I give my daughter robitussin when she gets a cough (only half a tsp) and that seems to help quite a bit Ive never heard of vics on the feet...but you could close you and her in the bathroom with hot water running then let the steam fill up the room and sit there...that should loosen it up to the point of it all coming out or atleast to make her more comfy at night

my 20 month old has cold induced asthma.. It will cause a tight cough that gets worse at night... My doc suggested dinnatap only if he couldn't sleep because of the cough.. He also has to do alot of breathing treatments during the day.. Coughing is a good thing, it keeps mucus from building up. If it doesnt get better in about a week I would take her back to the doctor.

my son who is 20 months old has had a nasty cough for a couple weeks now. my Ped. told me that a cough is a very good thing because it keeps the mucous from going into the lungs and causing phemonia. give cough medicine at night if she cant sleep but i think the humidifier should help alot. if her cough lasts more than 3 weeks take her to the doctors and see whats up.
good luck!
ive never heard of putting vicks on the feet.

The cough may be from the lungs, in which case I would get them checked, or from nasal drip from a sinus infection, which will also accompany a runny nose. The infection may be taken care of with antibiotcs, or, my choice, if you want their immune system to get stronger the body should be able to take care of it in a week or two. Either way coloidial silver and powdered calcium ascorbate snuk into milk or juice will help both.
good luck.

Lots of water. The cough may be aggravated by dry hot air (heat).
