some asshole today at work spit half eaten candy on the table of the break room. i am/was the janitor and had to clean it up so i put a sighn on the table that said "dont spit half eaten food on the table. you are not 3. you know who you are." soe one ripped up the sign and threw it away and told the boss and the boss said that i can not put up signs telling people not to do stuff and the next tie i did i would get in trouble. so i said "well i quit then" and walked out. it is one thing to clean the place as it gets dirty but it is another to have to clean up food that has already been in some ones mouth of of a table with a trash can right beside it. the peole there do stuff like pee all over the floor, throw toilet paper all over the bathroom, and spray hand soap everywhere in the bathroom. i said as i left "no wonder the last janitor quit". is it alright what i did with not putting up with there crap and letting them clean thier own messes or should they have the right to act like..

I really understand how you feel. I use to work at office building were grown people were slobs. Some were down right nasty. So I know that you have enough to do without employees adding to the hard job you already have. But if your job is a janitor well you are getting paid to clean up. However you quit so BRAVO. Just try to find a job were you do not have to clean up after slobs. A real long time ago I use to hang out in the mall and became friends with a janitor. One time I was talking to him and these slobs were drinking soda and well the trash can was right in front of them, but NO,they had to rudely sit the used paper cups on the benches. I then said to my friend, don't you hate people like that and he said, Well, if it was not people like that I would not have a job. I know that you are mad, and I get that way to, but unfortunately there will always be inconsiderate slobs out there.

Unfortunately as a janitor this is your job, Even if it means cleaning up after slobs. You should not have quit your job for a reason like this. You should have asked first if you could place a sign up before taking it upon yourself to do so. I know this isn't what you want to hear but its life.

On a second note please understand I feel for you its disgusting to have to clean up after pigs. I suggest in the future to find a different line of work because as a janitor this is in the job description.. Be happy your not doing it in a school. Kids can be much worse. I would have rather put on a pair of gloves and cleaned the half eaten candy then clean what can happen in a schools bathroom or throw up from sick kids.. Just food for thought..

Good luck job hunting.

Common sense and professional sense are two totally different things. It was not fair what happened but it is the norm. I also don't think it was a reason to quit but we all have to fight our chosen battles. We don't know why the candy was on the table like that. Maybe the person was choking and after they spat up the candy they was rushed to a different part of the facility? Or maybe that particular person was just nasty....who knows for sure?
We all got sick at work but I have yet to see someone including myself go back and clean up vomit that didn't make it to the garbage or toilet in time. Hell I wonder how janitors can clean a bathroom with pubes and piss on the urinal and overflowed toilets after someone took a mighty dump!?! But again it's not fair but those are part of the job discriptions that we all have and have to do but is never mentioned in the hiring process. I hope this helps give you some peace of mind.

I don't blame you. Your job description might have included emptying trash and mopping floors, but I don't think it included cleaning up messes that were intentionally made exclusively for you to clean up. Those people are just acting like spoiled little children. I have a 3 year old and even she would not spit a half eaten candy bar for someone to clean up.
However, instead of making the sign I would have possibly tried to calmly talked to the boss and let him/her know what was going on.

Mr Bob,

I hope your passion for doing the right thing hasn't left you Jobless. If I knew you I would be proud of you. Who ever spat that sweet out was a slob. And your boss wasn't valuing what you do by not allowing you to put some sort of objection. Do you think your boss just thought that you went to far in your reaction? Or perhaps it was the boss that spat out the sweet?. In the future I think you have to think of another way of expressing an objection, because this way doesn't seem to work in that environment. I hope you find a way.

You must work in a factory...my husband tells me all kinds of stuff like that goes on there and I just can't believe adults would act like that.

I work in an office building with 64 people using the bathrooms and kitchen & none of us do that. However, we truly love and appreciate our janitor. He's an awsome guy & we all help him out however we can. That may be the difference.

I probably would have wanted to quit if I were you but do you have another job lined up? That would be my concern.

Signs of that sort get put up in my college dorm alot. I feel that they are justified. By the time people are adults, they should know better than to be utterly disgusting and rude. Some people think they can make whatever mess they want to, because "its the janitor's job to clean it up." But its not. As you said, its your job to clean normal messiness, not to clean up after people who behave like pigs. They would never (I hope!) behave like that in their own home, or at a friends house.

I always feel so bad for the folks who's job it is to clean up in corporate offices. Workers are complete pigs!!!!!. My office isn't too bad. But you'd be surprised at who the offenders are and you may not know it until they quit or leave. I worked pt at night for another corporation in their call center...OMG the day people were sooooo freaking disgusting. WHO SH!TS ON THE FLOOR?!? in the office bathroom!!!!! I mean you had to of known it came from you! if fell out of your butt or off your hand, accidents happen, but WHY! would you leave it there for others to see! And why would you leave your box or plate of half eaten food on the break-room table? You've got to walk right by the trash cans to leave the room why not throw it away on your way out? I just don't get it; Its just plain common courtesy to others to clean up after yourself and there is no reason why you should have gotten in trouble for putting the sign up.

Simply pathetic the way people behave when they don't have to clean up the mess. Childish and rude is what comes to my mind. Its one thing to clean water spots around the sink, and little soap dribbles- but HONESTLY too much more then that is BULL crap. Sorry for all your trouble. Maybe you will find a job where people act civilized and decent. Good luck!!

I probably would have put up a lighter hearted more comical sign that said something like "Your mother does not work here. Please be courteous and clean up your mess," Certainly you were right to quit your job, because you already had a discussion with your boss - who basically told you that you do not have the right to be treated respectfully. I hope you find a much better job.
