Its not that hard if you need to do blood work on your pet and less evasive and stressful than taking them to the vet every time. My 14 year old has been drawing blood for over 3 years. And her favorite trainees are pits. We use pits for the younger ones to practice they are not mean vicious dogs.

Home testing is not absolutely necessary. It is a matter of personal
preference. But, it does allow you to control you animals diabetes with
more accuracy than relying on a visit to the vet every couple of months.
Some people prefer to use the diasticks to test the urine, which is
fine. However, some dogs urine glucose may have a negative reading even
when the actual blood glucose level is high, say 270 (15 mm/l). If the
dog was regulated in this case, then home blood glucose testing would be
wise so that you would know how low the bg's are, since the urine
glucose will always be negative.

Blood sugars fluctuate and the dog needs to maintain levels as close to normal as possible. Sugar levels too high cause tissue damage and sugars too low can effect all major organs. Talk to your vet but,I am sure they will recommend a high protein diet with complex carb supplements. I am not sure what a dogs normal sugar level is but I was a nurse of endocrinology prior to my disability. Keep corn syrup on hand an only use in an emergency, it burns off quickly so it can not be used to regulate. You must for now on keep the dog under close supervision. Good Luck.

I wouldn't do a home blood test just because there are special machines IE Vet Test, ISTAT, etc, that soecializes in animal hematology. You also need the Normal values for Canine/Feline blood tests. Go to the Vet and get it done properly.

Test usually find worms, or heart disease, or any other kind of illness. It can tell if your pet is lacking something in it's diet. I know when dogs get older it's wise to do this or take him to the vet and do one. He may have a better chance of living longer if problems are caught early. It's a good idea if you're a serious pet owner and want take care of your dog like one of the family.
