There are certain qualities of any product which are critical to its performance or sales quality. Those qualities are normally controlled in the manufacturing process via manufacturing specifications which dictate what those qualities should be --- and, the finished products are usually routinely tested in some way to ensure that those qualities are achieved and adhered to. They can relate to the safety of use, the contents of the product or any other critical factor.

They can be minimums (e.g. minimum alcoholic content), maximums (maximum weight) or ranges. But the purpose is always the same. To achieve a promised quality on a consistent basis in every example of the product.
