Spending a small amount of time in the sun is not as dangerous as the skin cancer Nazis would have you believe. A little color is not going to kill you as long as you are moderate. That means no tanning booths, no "laying out" in the sun to get a tan. Just wear some shorts and go for a walk.

when you go tanning use a good accelerator with a bronzer any thing by designer skin works very well. the longer you can wait to take a shower after you tan the better. 4 to 6 hours is good. the time gives the bronzer in the lotion time to bronze your skin. after you shower moisturize with a step 3 body lotion. (you can find great body lotions at most tanning salons)
do some research on tanning. check out smart tan and tanningtruth.com

You can go out in the sun and get a tan on a regular basis and never get skin cancer and you can maintain your tan with short intervals in a tanning bed.
Use moisturizers on your skin to keep you skin from drying out and your tan will last longer. I recommend almond oil as the skin absorbs it better. Eat foods with vitamin E too.

your tan is only temporary as your dead skin cells slough off. try to keep your skin moisturized as much as possible. Shaving and scrubbing in the bath or shower also exfoliates your skin and makes you lose your tan faster so try to exfoliate before you tan.
Use a lotion with light bronzer in it to gradually keep a tan from fading. I would avoid this if you have really dry skin though, but its better than UV rays!

you won't get skin cancer for having bits of sun at a time. put a little suntan on everyday before you leave the house.
