I have the same problem - its a result of chronic sinusitis caused by swelling in the sinus tissues. The underlying cause is usually allergies, but the problem is caused in some people by polyps, unusually narrow sinus cavities, or chronic infection. The drip is worse in the morning because some sinuses only drain when the head is tilted.

Here's what helps me: before bedtime, I take a12-hour antihistamine that has a decongestant in it, and 12-hour Mucinex. The antihistamine and decongestant reduce swelling, and the Mucinex dilutes the mucus to make it drain easier. When the problem is worse than usual, I also take the meds in the morning.

Several people I work with have had their sinuses reamed out surgically, which completely solved their problems. This procedure doesn't help if the problem is caused by allergies, but it is very effective if it is caused by polyps or narrow cavities. An MRI is needed to see if there are polyps or narrow sinuses.

Sounds very consistent with allergies. Have you been tested for allergies? If you are using a feather or down pillow you need to switch to one that is hypoallergenic. Encase your mattress in a protector designed for people with allergies. You can buy all these things at WalMart or any other store. Buy a pillow protector too. Run all of your bedding through the wash with a fragrence free hypoallergenic or all natural laundry product and DO NOT use a scented fabric softener. If you have carpet in your bedroom consider getting rid of it or shampoo it thoroughly with a hpyoallergenic rug shampoo. Consider adding an air purifier in your room if you don't already use one in your bedroom. In the meantime get tested for allergies if you haven't been tested already. If you have been tested and are positive see your allergist for more help or see an ENT doc to get this under control.
