It depends on what you are looking for.
I think karate is better because people tend to stay in it longer than sports activities.
(All the jocks from high school are out of shape and are not involved in any sports anymore and I am still training in the martial arts, I have actually got a couple of them to join our dojo.)

Definitely Karate. You learn great self defense techniques as well as brilliant offense. Soccer is fun and all, but if you ever wanted a career out the two, Karate would be more promising. Karate isn't just physical training, that's only half. It disciplines you into having a stable mind set and is a great stress reliever.

I'm not sure what you mean by better. Better for what? Better for health, social skills, scholarships, exercise, etc.
For the bulk of the world except the US, Soccer/Football is king, played by the best of the players. Despite bias by some US based folks soccer usually teaches what other sports teach such as discipline, work ethic, balance, in this sport leg strength, etc. It can be a brutal sport as witnessed by anyone who has actually played it. I've played soccer, basketball, football, etc and have done full contact fighting so I have some frame of reference here. The game requires explosive strength and endurance which is why the players have very strong legs and usually core muscles as well. The bruisers typically have strong upper bodies too.
Karate can be fun, can teach discipline, can teach good work ethic, and can teach good self defense if the school spars.
Soccer gives you a sport that is main stream and worldwide and the potential for a scholarship if you are young enough and good enough.
Karate is wide spread and you can compete in tournaments if you wish in most cases. I believe ESPN (fill in the blank for the number) shows the contests/tournaments now and again.
What do you want?

I think that karate is better because you get more muscle workout as opposed to running around in soccer.

Soccer is! You will have awesome cardio and can run like a deer!

I don't see over weight guys on the soccer field, but I see endless fatty's in the Karate dojo!

So in a self defense situation you don't have to worry because you'll be able to outrun your opponent and get away with ease without violence.

Personally, I am not into soccer/football.
On the other hand, I practise wado-ryu karate as an art, because I love practising it, it has made me fitter and is good from a self-defence perspective. (It gives you an edge over an attacker.)

People do tend to stick to martial arts longer than other sports.
It is certainly more interesting!
Get to meet people from all areas/cultures/life-styles etc.

Well, if you are pretty good at it, soccer is much more likely to get you a college scholarship if you plan to go to college. It's also something that you can do as a "team" if you like the team enviornment. Martial arts is a much more individual discipline. It is great for learning self-defense, so it depends what your goals are. Look at your goals and choose from there.

Better for what? Exercise?

Soccer players are skinny for a reason you're basically running around a huge field for 90 minutes or more. Martial arts wlll improve your balance and coordination especially capeoria.
