Hi Claire, I love great danes. I got to know one by babysitting it awhile ago, he was a real sweety. He was a little odd though. He had come over to our house all the time with his owner but he was still so attached that when he was left at our house he would almost panic. It took him almost a year of babysitting and visits to calm down and eat all his food, and when we left he would drool everywhere! No joke, the floor, the windows, the furniture, everywhere he went. He would get really panicked about being alone. He also was really skinny. His owner tried and tried to get him to put on weight but he never did. However, I think he wasn't the typical dane. He was adorably cute, and would lean on us. He loved to snuggle and just curl up with people. He would also 'attack' pillows and blankets of his. He looked like a kitten, it was hilarious. If you want to know more this a link to the Great Dane Club of America http://www.gdca.org/ and this one has some informational links http://www.ginnie.com/gdlinks.htm
They are so cute - I mean noble, don't want to insult them (lol) here is a link to pictures http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=pictures%20of%20great%20danes&rs=2&search=great+danes&ei=UTF-8&ico-yahoo-search-value=http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=AlLjCWmcBI_6qcMnnUv9EKsazKIX/SIG=111gjvvgj/*-http://search.yahoo.com/search&ico-wikipedia-search-value=http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=ArnfrKss8J5qLFPljE2KvSYazKIX/SIG=11ia1qo58/**http%3a//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special%3aSearch&vm=r&fr=ks-ans&fr2=tab-web

Danes are wonderful, beautiful, graceful, loving dogs. I've spent over 30 years with them, and consider myself so lucky to have been blessed with them.
That being said, they are not the dog for everyone. They need a firm and stable upbringing, and puppies can be "the puppy from hell" at times. Most important is obedience training, with a dog that will mature at 150 lbs or more, they need to be under your control at all times.
Dane puppies are unbelievably clumsy, and they won't be mature until they are 3 years old. Be prepared for a LONG puppyhood. Naturally, everything costs more for a Dane - food, vet bills etc. But I wouldn't trade them for any other breed.

I have a dane x rotty. she is beautiful. I thought about getting a pure breed dane however they can have a few health problems and are not generally long livers. I love the way they stand proud. Our Rosie is complete tan colour some times she looks like a dane but a bit plump

Great danes are great and sweet and are very affectionate.
They like other dogs can be lazy, my friends great dane is very lazy which does cause a problem when trying to get him out of the door for a walk due to him not wanting to go and the size of him. But he is great

I Love Great Danes.
But
They need to be trained very well because such big dogs must have manners . I had one Dylan when I was a young teenager and he dragged me right across a field because I had slipped the lead over my wrist he was only a puppy but so strong. He had seen another dog and got excited. I was not badly hurt but it made me realise that I really had no control over him.
We started Puppy classes the very next day and he lived to 11 year old
He was a soft soppy dope all of his life but unfortunately his poor old legs gave out which I believe is a common problem with such big dogs.
I loved him dearly. But I have never had such a big dog since. My next dog was a Rhodesian Ridgeback absolutely the best dog ever and now just three weeks ago I rescued a 9 month old Rotti not because I want to have a dangerous dog but because I didn't want someone else who wanted a dangerous dog to get their hands on her.
She is also a sweetie but I am getting loads of abuse when I walk her in light of the bad press Rots have had over the last few months
Still never mind I have broad shoulders.

I've had Danes for decades. Wonderful dogs, outstanding additions to the family. Although every one I've had has been great with the kids--especially when the kids were young, danes can be kind of clumsy and unaware of their strength as puppies and you need to have the space for them to run around.

I own a 10 month old Dane. We have had our days! You have to think of the puppy behaviour that happens in regular sized dogs and then add 80 to 100lbs to it.
He is very affectionate and very much a people person. When they step on your toes you know it!!

I grew up with two Great Danes. They are a wonderful breed. Unfortunately, they just don't live long enough. :(

Never had one but would gladly have one. Like any dog they need to learn their manners as young pups. They also need exercise.......they are truly couch potatoes........but even the big/lean potato needs a good walk.
If you have a dane who knows his manners, lives in a stable household and gets exercise, they are wonderful. My brother has had them and whilel "stable" doesn't exactly describe their house, the dogs have been great.

Awesome dogs - great family pets. but they require a lot vet care and a lot of food. They also have special needs - like having their water and food bowls at eleivated heights at their neck level - bend down to eat on the floor can cause their stomach to flip and this leads to the dogs death if not caught in time.
They are my favorite type of dog though so big and loveable and will protect the house like nobodies business.
