Segmentation is anyway you choose to divide up your market- it can be based on attitudes, behavior, physical characteristics, geographic, etc.
Once you have segmentated your market and depending on the product offering, benefits, value, etc- your product can be nich marketed or mass marketed- based on the value of the segments that would most likely benefit from the product offering

Segmentation is the division of the available markets. It means those that might buy your products or services being classified into categories or brackets. Segmentation is divided into four major categories: geographic (region, city size), demographic (gender, age, income, education. Race and religion are parts of demographic too), psychographic (social class, lifestyle) and behavioural (occassions, usage rate). Mass marketing is a marketing activity where you're marketing your products or services to mass or a large group of people or market segments, for example TV ads, internet, etc. Niche marketing is a marketing activity where you're only targetting one or a few strongest market segments, for example, in-flight magazine ads, presentation, etc.

i have the feeling that you're a bit confused with the marketing jargons. segmentation based on socio-demography, race, religion, age etc., is done to classify the customers, while mass marketing & niche marketing are types of marketing. mass marketing may cater to the entire mass, while niche will focus on a segmented market.

wow, that is alot to answer in one question. i will try though. Mass marketing refers to methods of selling and\or products and services used by a large percentage of the population. Niche marketing means you sell to a particular subset of the mass market, at least mostly. A so called niche market can be quite large, actually, or tiny. just depends.
Let me put it this way, you are on the right track, knowing who you will be selling to in regards to age, so on and so forth is a big help. you wouldnt want to offer skateboards in a Modern Maturity magazine...ect. the more you know about who you sell to, the better off you will be.

Here's an article about niche vs. mass marketing:
http://marketing.about.com/cs/advertising/a/nichevsmass.htm
Let's say that you're a mass merchandiser like Kmart, Bloomingdales, or Walgreen's. You'd like to have as many people as possible shop at your stores, and you'd be carrying a lot of holiday goods that would satisfy many people across multiple demographics.
If you were a niche marketer, like a specialty gift shop, you might take a different approach to the types of goods and services offered by your store. You may, for example, have sales to attract Jewish customers by having thematic items for Hanukkah; or, nativity scenes for Christian customers. Kwanzaa is the African-American cultural holiday and you'd be marketing to a racial community.
