What do i need to do to get my cat to fly with me? I have seen people bring their little purse dogs on planes before, and i don't want my cat to have to be underneath with the cargo. So what do i need to do?

Hello Jon,

As a cat owner myself (and one that has to take them on twolong haul flights this year) this is a subject close to my heart.

Firstly what kind of flight are you doing. If its a short (less than 5 hour) flight from point A to point B then you may be allowed to put the cat in an approved soft sided carrier which will fit under the seat in front of you. This is usally only allowed in coach, they dont allow animals in the business and first class cabins on most airlines. Keep in mind you cat needs a flight ticket too.

Get a harness for the cat and get him or her used to wearing it before the flight, that way you can take it out of the carrier (providing you attach the harness) and let it stretch its legs in some quiet part of the airport, of course you are the best judge if your cat will find this stressful or not (two of mine would love that and two would have a coronory).

If your airline wont let you take the cat in the cabin then the cat has to be checked as baggage. There are strict requirements on the cat carrier and of course if you are flying internationally there will be customs regulations on the other end you need to adhere to.

In the event your cat does have to be in the hold make sure to ask the stewardess prior to AND after take off to double check with the flight crew that the hold heating is on, otherwise your cat could freeze to death en route.

If you are doing a multiple leg journey then make sure its on the same carrier and make sure to mark the crate with all the flight info and tape copies of you contact info and itniery to the crate.

Finally use google to get as much info as you can, PETA (of all people) have some good info on flying with your cat, yes they are a bunch of whakos but on this subject they talk some sense.

I hope you both have a safe journey.

Several years ago I moved from the US to the UK and took my cat. Recently I moved back and he came along, so he's a seasoned flier now. You need to check with the airline before buying your ticket to learn about bringing your cat. Different airlines have different restrictions and if you are flying internationally there are customs laws as well. Airlines limit the number of pets that can be on a flight, so you will need to book well in advance. They also charge a fee for the cat.
One time my cat had to fly as cargo (custom's regulation). The second time I took him as carry-on. He did fine both times, but the carry-on option was better, I think. For one thing, the amount of time he was caged was much shorter, since I didn't have to check him in before checking myself in. My total journey was about 15 hours and my cat did fine. He was calmest when I just left him alone. When I would reach into the carrier to pet him he would get riled up and meow a lot but when I left him alone he just slept. The only problem I had was that my cat wouldn't eat or drink in route (probaly due to stress) and he became dehydrated. If you have a particularly long flight and your cat won't drink water you might need to have a vet check him out after you arrive.

I have worked for the airlines for 10 years plus.
You will need to book a reservation for the cat with the airline that you are flying. They will charge a small fee. You will need to get a sherpa bag from a pet store - this is a small carrier with mesh on the sides. I would not put water or food in with the cat - this will get messy. I would put a toy that your kitty likes as well as a blanket that he/she likes so that they have your scent and will feel more comfortable. Also, usually you will need to sit in a window seat.
I hope this helps

I do like flying the cat too, yet mine dr. say to decrease out on fat. in case you intend to flying the cat, use lot of peanuts oil so no sticking to flying pan. I cook dinner it in mine wontons soup merely like quite some of the neighbor cats. much less fattinesses and oil this style. upload soya sauce and pinches of sugar to bringing the organic flavorings.. stable lucks!
