First of all....the reason they are "inmates" is because they lied, cheated, stole, etc. Not saying that the corrections officers are angels, but please consider the source. Also, the pay in some of our correctional institutions is so horrible, some of the guards may be looking for some way to supplement their income. They are surrounded by felons day in and day out, maybe some of their behavior rubbed off!

Are you saying ALL correctional facilities? If so, I have to disagree with you. I am sure these types of cases that you described has happened but not at ALL correctional facilities. You were told all of this by an inmate?? Do you know how many lies and exagerated stories I hear from inmates day in and day out? I work in a prison as a social worker and sometimes when inmates do not get their way, they tend to exagerate things. I rarely hear of staff killing inmates in ANY correctional facility for it would be all over the news (CNN, Good Morning America etc.). Drugs are sold in prison but not only do some correctional officer/staff let them in, the families and friends of the inmates does as well. Please know that if the staff member or family/friend is caught bringing drugs in, they will be prosecuted. As for the inmate telling the women who works in the prison that their family member will be harm if they do not have sex with them....Let me tell ya' that is a BIG LIE. If the female employee have sex with an inmate it is because she wanted to. If the inmate say that to the female employee she has an option to write him up and he will be housed in segregation where they only see daylight 1 hour and they live in what we in society considers a cage. That inmate will also be transferred to another institution (away from his family). The other thing she can do is take a warrant out on him and they (female staff and inmate) will go to court. So, please don't believe everything an inmate tells you. He may have told you that to make you feel sorry for him or to manipulate you. Always remember, he's not in prison for selling girl scout cookies.

Correctional facilities are always a bit more of a primal environment, in that you are dealing with people who don't follow the rules. As for actual corrections happening, that depends on the jurisdiction, but the trend over the years has been to reject the rehabilitative model and focus more on "warehousing" inmates. In my experience, the "correction" happens when inmates are taken off the commit-crimes-to-feed-drug-habits treadmill and have time to think about their lives and whether this is really the direction they want to be going. But the state does very little to promote rehabilitation.

I used to be a correctional officer and this does not happen. I worked for a prision that had adult males from 16 to 100. The only inmates that weren't there, were the ones on death row. The inmates have more rights and get by with more things then the officers do. Also of coarse, no inmates believes in God until they get caught and go to prision. I have seen it time and time again. Heck, if I was homeless I would commit a crime and go to jail/prision...you get free food, bed, warm shower, free dental, medical and college. This is crap...............

what about when the inmates kill the officers??????????

for starters, black mail is not "allowed", when the administration catches the officers that do this type of thing, bring in drugs, black mail, threaten etc,. the officers are no longer employed and usually face charges themselves. Just as other law enforcement officers are expected to follow the laws, so are we( correctional officers). unfortunately, just like sometimes there are "dirty" cops, there are "dirty" correctional officers

Inmates begin categorizing themselves as victims right from the start. The justice system, the prison system, etc. is just terrible to them.
Their mentality seems to be stuck at about that of a teenagers, not to offend teenagers, but everything is about their wants and everyone is against them if they aren't given what they want.
There are alot of people in the system that have it better inside than they ever had it outside, not because of society, but because of their unwillingness to conduct themselves according to societies expectations of mature behavior.

You forgot to mention that inmates have killed correction officers many many times! Its not a perfect world. The best thing to do is avoid going to prision and try to be an ideal citizen!

Yes, I knew this. The ACLU won't touch these types of cases. Overcrowding, prisoner abuse by inmates and guards, and unsanitary conditions are NOT rehabilitation. I guess when you turn drunk drivers into murderers and rapists, society is getting better.

oh please I don't believe this for a minute. They are in Jail it is not supposed to be nice and fair play. Getting hurt is all apart of going to jail. inmates have more threat from other inmates than the guards. if the guards hurt the inmates they probably have it coming.

Well somebody's got to step up and do it, cause obviously the year death row inmate that's locked up for 75 years will never be put to death.
