We have a tv (less then 10 yrs old) that was handed down from my in-laws. Nothing wrong with it. We don't use it very often as it is in our living room and usually behind closed cabinet doors. Once every few weeks or couple months the TV will turn on by itself. It will do it for a few days in a row at the exact same time every day. Then it won't do it for a couple months. Then it will again, but at a different time of day. We have removed the remote from the room and taken the batteries out. We make sure to turn it off by the tv and I have unplugged it numerous times and plugged it back in.

It doesn't seem to fit into any neighbors routines (garage door openers, etc) so we're stumped. I need a good answer.

Honestly, I don't know what a good answer would be. I guess I'm looking for a scientific explanation. I've asked this under "TVs" and I got a bunch a paranormal answers. Like I said, I'm looking for a logical explanation. There has to be one, right?

You raise a good point J K M. I will start unplugging it when not in use.

If you want to stop this from occurring, unplug the set and leave it unplugged. There is an obvious failure in some component and I personally would not think that the set was safe enough to be left unattended. I have heard of house fires that were started by a T.V. set but I really was skeptical in belief. Please don't be the trial case. They are too damn cheap to hang on to a faulty set. There are some things in life which are not so important as to understand why they do what they do.

Respectfully,

LOL - Don't want to believe you have ghosts?

If the TV is in standby and a current (power) fluctuation happens, it can trigger the TV to come on. Actually the TV should not be that sensitive but it does happen. You can go and have a chat with someone at a place like Radio Shack. If they think this is what is happening, maybe they can recommend a spike suppressor that also smooths out the power fluctuations.

I have had a similar thing happen to me, and what I found is some of the new power saver globes (the one that look like little florecent lamps) were turning my sorround sound system on. This wasn't happening all the time only once in a while.

Does the TV have a timer function? It could be set to do this. Are you having electrical issues with that outlet?
