For Camouflage. A study was performed for a Police Department several years ago (Using a local SWAT team and tactics) The study showed that when a person is camouflaged it gives the Team members an extra 2 seconds to be identified as a police officer/SWAT team by a perpetrator and the perpetrator then will react in another 2 seconds. 4 seconds may not sound like much, but It can seem like a lifetime when the bull excrement is hitting the rotating oscillator, and lives have been saved in those 4 seconds. (Sometimes even the perpetrators) In the military its a little different. The rules are those that see the enemy first win the battle, those that are seen first are toast. I.E. If they cant see me until its to late My platoon or Squad of troops have a better chance at surviving the battle. Concealment/Camouflage can be used also as a tool for reconnaissance. I cant be seen and I can watch the enemy for hours and report to my superiors what is going on, then my superiors can use that information to plan for most contingencies and surprise the enemy again my troops have a better chance of survival, and of beating the enemy.

The paint breaks up the outline of soldier face, if you are wondering if there is a set guild line for the pattern the answer is yes, I am not sure what any of the other branches use for the guild lines but the Army uses FM 7-8.

It's camoflauge. The purpose is to blend in so the enemy won't spot the soldier as easily. The colour also reduces sun reflection as a possible source of irritant to the soldier.
Think of burglarizing a house at night dressed in all white or dressed in all non-shiny black. Which burglar is less visible?

Because it makes them look pretty (heavy on the sarcasm). If you want to hide in a dark room, you dress all in black so you blend in. If you are out in nature, you make sure you are covered in the colors of the forest- hence the black and green.

Camouflage...plain and simple. Stealth to avoid detection. Especially at night. A non camo'd face stands out like a white sheet of paper on a dark moonless night.

Camouflage. The purpose of Camouflage is to break up the space of an object to that it blends in with the environment. It is an old military tactic that dates way back.

Actually it's not paint at all and they have developed an evolutionary adaptation where the skin naturally changes to mimic its surroundings. Very cool thing, they learned it from an alien who they convinced to star in Predator.
