My mom's computer is currently running Windows ME - so I want to upgrade her computer to run XP. I have seen others say that you can actually just buy the XP Upgrade to do it instead of buying the full version - but I want to be sure I buy the right one before jumping into this. Thanx so much for any help with this!!!!

You should be able to get by using the XP upgrade edition. You might also consider getting the XP OEM Windows installation. It's the full, bootable installation. Check NewEgg or ZipZoomFly. It's reasonably priced.

BEFORE you switch over to WinXP you should make sure that your computer will handle it WELL. You should have a minimum of 1Gb Ram (don't go with what most people will tell you that 256Mb is ok or perhaps 512Mb because you will be VERY disappointed in the performance.) The other thing to check is your processor, you should check the specs on XP to see the requirements before buying an upgrade...

You might want to think about buying a new computer with Vista when it comes out.

Wait until Jan 30 and buy Windows Vista home edition. Save a further upgrade later.

The upgrade is cheaper but, the full version
(XP Professional Edition) is worth the extra cost.

You should be able to use an upgrade.

Me was awful, it will be worth your time to go to XP.

If you consider Vista, it will need a lot more ram, you may give up speed for security?

I just noticed some of the advice is to download the upgrade. Unless you are good at backup etc. Pay the little extra to have the disk, it makes solving problems later easier.

Yes buy the upgrade - that is what its for. Microsoft gives people who already have windows a break on the price by offering the much cheaper "upgrade" version.

I'm not sure, but I think you can buy an upgrade to XP Home but not to XP Pro.

You can buy the upgrade a lot cheaper than the full version. Local stores like Best Buy and Circuit City will have it, and you might find it cheaper on the internet at Buy.com and SoftwareOutlet.com, even with paying shipping.

If your ME is registered, you can go to Microsoft.com and download the XP upgrade. They will check to see that your ME is not pirated and if not you can upgrade there.
