i think it's best to ask. tell her that she's important to you and you would like to see her exclusively (even if you already are seeing her exclusively). formalizing it verbally clears up any potential confusion and shows her respect by giving her a choice.
women hate uncertainty and want to feel secure. if you can show her that you're secure enough with yourself to ask her, then doing so enables her to trust you and feel safe.

Its not silly at all, I would want to know for sure if the guy wanted me to be his gf or was just fooling around with me.

You don't have to ask, just talk to her and hang around her and see if she likes you. If she doesn't like you, forget it, and move on to greener pastures.
