My 2 cats, kind of live in the front room. That's where they sleep.

Problem is, when i go into the room, they run and hide under the table where i can't get to them.

I haven't done anything to them, i'm not cruel to them, so why are they doing this?

I've had them since they were 4 weeks old, when they arrived after having been found wandering around the streets.
They are now nearly 2 years old.

Once upon a time, they would sit on my lap when i was working on the computer.

The only time they come near me now though, is when they want feeding.

They must be really shy, just give it time. Some cats are like that. Don't approach them or make any sudden moves, they should realize you aren't a threat when they realize you feed and take care of them. Over time it should stop, although I have known cats to just hide from everyone their whole lives without being abused / mistreated.

It looks like you have gotten some pretty strait answers. The only thing I think will help is patients, patients and more patients. They evedently are not used to you yet. And they will be soon. Placing your hand down for them to smell, helps them realize you are a familiar scent. Please do this slow, because fast movements startle them. It wont be long and you'll be asking how to get them off your lap (lol). Their past is where to start as far as trying to understand them. If they were wild, or not subject to being around people, it will take longer. Having two could be a double edged sword. It could help keep them from needing a friend, or when one warms up to you, the other may sence there is no threat. Keep feeding them, TALK to them ALOT. They will be your friend for life. Just hang in there.

Personality. Some cat's are just like that. There is a big tabby stray who comes into my house and will talk to me and let me pick him up despite the fact that I always chase him out as he is unneutered and my youngest cat, benji is terrified of him. Benji turned up in my garden a couple of years ago as a tiny kitten, I was fairly sure (and still am) that the stray is his dad. Benji has lived with us since he was tiny, never been chased or shouted at or mistreated and he still runs away all the time. That's cats for you.

You are not alone. When my mum got my cat Tabby she hid behind the sofa all the time. My mums tip is to let the cats come to you and be patient, it wont happen straight away. It's important not to call them or bend down to look at them when they are in their hiding place. Sit down, relax and ignore the cats, don't even make eye contact with them. Eventually either boredom or curiosty will get the better of them. Gently tap on your lap to encourage them to jump on your lap. Let them do it when they are ready. Good luck!

Kittens or young cats I assume. They find comfort in each other and see little need for you right now. Time will probably fix this.

How long have you had the cats? Were they tame/ferral when you got them?
I would suggest hand feeding them for a while - this is what we did with our ferral kitten when we got him and now he is putty in hands!

prehaps its because they think your bothering them too much.

one of my cats doesnt like much human contact so i leave her alone but when she wants attention, they'll come to you so just ignore them and they'll soon change theyre minds:P

its normally girl cats that are like that, boy cats love all the attention they can find!
