I have taken every allergy medicine and in every combination for a long time now and my allergies seem to just persist and even get worse. I cut it all out and am taking oil of oregano, vitamin C and some other supplements with one Clariton each day. I have had a closed sinus passage on the left side for months - no air in, no air out - and am wondering if there is anything that might take care of that situation short of getting it "roto-rootered"? Suggestions?

Have you tried Flonase? I'm sure you've tried the saline flush using Ocean or similar product. If you've been plugged up for that long you might have a sinus infection that needs antibiotics. Short of that I would recommend taking a decongestant and then after 20 minutes or so go in the bathroom, cover the crack in the door, close any vents and turn off exhaust fans, and blast the hot water in the shower. Assuming you're just plugged up this will thin the mucous and give you some relief.

If that doesn't work, you really should think about seeing an ENT specialist. They can do the "roto-rooter" job, start a treatment of allergy shots to train your immune system, or you may need surgery to correct a deviated septum or something.

I also take one Clariton(D) every day.

This is half and half medical and natural.

When my sinuses (for 40 years) would get really bad, I always used a little bit of Vicks Vaporub in the edge of my nasal passages. They open up totally.. The Menthol works wonders.

Another interesting fact is that about 5 or 6 years ago when we started getting flu shots, all sinus problems ceased. We haven't had anything but the tiniest suggestion of the sniffles since.

I am 65 and went my entire life without allergies until 3 or 4 years ago. I thought I had developed a wheat allergy. When I would eat bread, I would immediately start to cough and on 4 occasions my throat closed completely while the bread was still in my mouth.

Needless to say I stopped eating wheat, then had the same reaction to raw mushrooms (which I had eaten for years) My throat closed completely. With this I finally concluded that yeast is a fungus and mushrooms also, maybe I wasn't allergic to wheat but Yeast.

Since then I can eat bread products without yeast and cooked mushrooms but not raw.

Another odd thing I am going to suggest you research is Candida Albicans, I concluded that I had most all of the symptoms for it and gave myself a full Colon Cleansing. Since doing that My yeast reaction is enormously better, no more serious reactions.

It is a challenge to try to solve our own medical problems without taking a ton of man made medications. I would also agree the Chiropractor would be an excellent Idea.

Good Luck.

I suffer from terrible allergies too. As far as a natural approach, here are a few suggestions:

Get the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze Air Purifier (they sell cheaper models at some electronic stores like Curcuit City... maybe even Walmart.) Run it in your bedroom 24/7. Ideally, get one for every room you spend a lot of time in. I swear to God, I used to get a sinus infection once a month because of all of the congestion/blockage due to my allergies. Since I got that, I only get sick maybe 3 times a year now instead of 12.

Have you heard of bee pollen? Bee pollen pills can be found at places like GNC, health food stores, some pharmacies. You need to buy pollen from bees in your area/state. They work for the same scientific reason that allergy immunization shots work. Bees make their pollen out of all of the plants that you and I are allergic to. Therefore, by ingesting the bee pollen, you are slowly building up a tolerance to those allergens. I personally, have tried this, but I am not very good at remembering to take pills, so I can't give you a lot of feedback on it.

Allergies really suck.

You really should try two more things; Chiropractic or Acupunture....they both deal with methds to help you with this...at least get a consultation with a chiropractor & see if they can help....I go to both!! (curvature of the spine) and acupuncture for dry eye and dry mouth, and NO the needles do NOT hurt; they are 1/2 the thickness of a human hair..all you feel is a slight tingling when first inserted and some slight pressure for 1-2 seconds....in my case, it will take a few months for results but you should really check into both of these!!!!!!!!!!!

you may want to try a netti pot, an old ayurvedic nasal passage cleanser that's getting more popular, you can find one at www.bytheplanet.com it's also great for environmental allergies. But like another user mentioned, completely closed off nostril for months sounds like it might be infected and that you should have looked at. Netti pots historically are useful as preventatives as opposed to just for problems, they can be used at the beginning of each day and are completely gentle and safe, warm water and sea salt! Good luck!

You can do some simple breathing exercise. For example,
Sit in a straight posture with your back straight. If possible, put one leg over the other Then, close one nostril and breathe in with the open nostril. Retain the breath for some time; few seconds to begin with; retention time can be slightly increased over time. Then breathe out as much as possible. Now close the open nostril and breathe from the other one and retain as before and then breathe out as much as you can.
You may avoid spicy and fatty food if you can.
There could be some relief, I believe.
