The secret of the desert? I would suggest reading 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph' by T.E. Lawrence.
Since he spent some time in the desert, reading his account of the conflict there is helpful in understanding a formative period in Egyptian/Middle Eastern history, and he came to a lot of conclusions similar to what you have said here: "Everything is strange, we must love it but not become addicted to it, and those who fool themselves - it kills without any mercy."

Well the desert to me is another world with it's open space and the sky full of stars, you wounder who created all these stars, millions and millions of stars, and quietness of the night where you hear nothing but your breath sounds.
You can pray to ALLAH with no interruptions, scanning the sky with your soul flying around.
Really it is a totally different experience where you are sitting at the dooms of the soft sands, in the desert of Arabia.Something which I can't describe.

"The desert, being an unwanted place, may very well be the last stand of life against nonlife. For in the lush and moist and wanted areas of the world, life pyramids against itself until it allies with the enemy nonlife."
--John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley
The desert is a delicate balance of life and death, where every new day is a miracle itself, and the forces of life and death pull back and forth like the tides. And yet life always returns, and makes the most of what's available to it, to flourish for all its worth while it can.

The desert is where the body and spirit overcome temptation. In the desert there are no comforts----there is only hardship. We overcome temptation by being deprived of comforts, for those comforts are sins themselves. For centuries men and women have gone to the physical desert in order to enter the spiritual desert that they overcome temptation. To go into the desert is to go alone with Christ in order to experience the true nature of the Christ that is within every believer. Jesus was in the desert for forty days and forty nights, not because he had to, but because he wanted to in order to prepare himself for his ministry. This is something that I recommend for anyone looking to dedicate their lives to the ministry. How long a person spends in the desert that they choose (not necessarily a literal desert) will depend on what the Holy Spirit has in store for them.
