When I was looking for ideas for cakes & toppers, I Googled wedding cakes under images. You'd be surprised how many great ideas are on there. Another resource is different bakery websites-most of them have galleries of cakes they've done.

I would totally go with an arrangement of fall leaves. Michaels and other craft stores will have tons of how-tos for you to make something really lovely, and you can put a few smaller ones around the tiers. So unique!
My wedding was in spring, and the florist made a flower cake-topper. I really didn't like the figureine ones. I mean, they're pretty expensive, and what am I going to do with it after the wedding? Stick it on a shelf and have to dust it?
Go for the leaves! Add in some berries and tiny twigs too, maybe. Oh, and you can gild the edges of the leaves too!

You could try using edible autumn flowers. Here are two that you could use.
Hibiscus syriacus(Flowering shrub): Although hardy to about -20°c, it flowers in the autumn the flowers are 5cm or more across and are stunningly beautiful - there are many named varieties providing a wide range of colours. The flavour is mild and they have a mucilaginous texture. They are delightful in salads, both for looking at and for eating.
NASTURTIUM: A very ornamental and free-flowering species, it is often in bloom from early summer until cut down by the autumn frosts. The flowers have a hot, watercress-like flavour and make a tasty addition to the salad bowl. T. minus is a closely related species with the same uses.
All the best!

I'd do the topper in earth tone flowers. Maybe a basket and flowers made from the cake/icing? A weave/basket designed cake will probably look best with this.

I love the autumn flower idea! I had a September wedding too but my cake was all white with only some green ivy. Keep it simple! Good luck!

My fiance and I have talked about taking a salt and pepper shaker and gluing them together for our cake topper. If you do not understand the significance of this, watch the movie "Fireproof." We watched it and loved it and the explanation they gave in the movie. May not be something you want but him and I are both simple and not interested in a bunch of frills and fancy things.

Do you both like football? If so maybe have a couple at the goal post.Other fall types of things would be pumpkins,or flowers.A pretty arrangement of flowers, and ribbon can be done nicely for any theme,or season.Congrats, and Good Luck!!!!
