As an addendum, you have probably heard the term because of the famous fatwas placed on various literary persons of interest. These fatwas were commands issued by various Islamic religious leaders calling for the deaths of the authors and publishers associated with certain books. These fatwas are calls for assasination in the name of god.
Probably the most (in)famous assasination fatwa is the one against author Salman Rushdie for his book The Satanic Verses. Though Rushdie was never killed, he was forced to go into hiding for many years. Furthermore, several employees at the publishing company in question were murdered, including a secretary.
