Last Wednesday she was spayed, she was on Metacam for 3 days. In the morning and at night she seems to go back to normal but she's only eating her wet food, not her dry, and drinking water at night. During the day she lays around and drools (smelly drool from the medicine) and hasn't given herself a bath.

Our vet said we could give her more Metacam if we felt she was in pain, but I don't want to make her more drugged up than she already is. He also said that cats and dogs drool when they have a bitter taste in their mouth. She's also smacking her mouth a lot (like when people taste something sour).

When can I expect her to return to normal and start bathing again?

We stopped giving her Metacam 3 days after the surgery, she's been off it for 3 days.

We don't give metacam after surgery for pain. We give torbutrol and it's usually given for 2 days after surgery.

Anesthesia can stay in an animals system 6-8 hours and even in some it takes 24 hours to be totally out of their system.

Although like people, all animals recover at different speeds, after a week she should be feeling pretty much back to her normal self.

Since I wasn't familiar with Metacam being given after surgery, I looked up some information on the internet for you regarding it. I would ask my vet why he prescribed that for your cat after spaying. Here's the site: http://www.persiancats.org/nss-folder/filefolder/MetacamRisksInCats.pdf

If you believe she's still not back to normal, definitely call your doctor today. Give him the symptoms and ask him why she's on Metacam instead of another type of pain medication.

Note: Since she's a bit older, it may take her some more time to bounce back, unlike a 6 month old kitten that seems ready to go the next day. But, if you're still unsure, a call to the vet wouldn't hurt.

Once she has finished her meds and had her stitches out she should be fine, this is normal for female cats after they have been spayed. I'd stick to the original dosage of metacam, it's more of an antihistamine than a pain killer. Wash her if shes not washing herself, if she doesn't like water wipe her over with a damp cloth. How old is your cat? the younger the cat the faster the recovery time. that's why kittens in pounds are put out in the enclosures with stitches still in them.

It took my one of my cats about 10 days to fully get back to normal. It took 2 days for her to recover from the anesthesia alone. She was over 7 years old. Another one of my cats (younger) was back to acting normal in about 3 days. A week seems to be the average recovery time. None of my cats were given any medication to take at home. They got some sort of antibiotic shot before leaving the vets office, but nothing else. I would imagine it's the meds that are making the recovery seem odd.

She probably no longer needs the pain meds. I'd suggest taking her off. If she acts like she's in pain when they wear off, maybe give her a half dose. When we had our male kitty fixed, he never even needed the pain meds. He tried to jump around as soon as we brought him home. The next day he was already back to normal.

the healing process usually takes about one week (7 days)- if she is not back to normal by then, I would call the vet.

She will get better as soon as she quit shoving drugs in her. You have taken pain meds before just like you they will make her droggy.

Of course she is eating canned verses dry. Any animal would. Quit shoving drugs in her. PLEASE!!
