It seems like my cat only purrs to make me stop petting/holding her sometimes. Am I making this up?

Cats purr for all kinds of reasons.
They purr when they are content, they purr when they are bathing themselves or each other and they will also purr if they are in pain...it's their way of giving themselves comfort.

If your cat wanted you to stop petting or holding her, she wouldn't purr to make you stop.
Take a look at her tail, if it's going back and forth very fast that's a sign you better stop whatever it is your doing to her and stop it fast.
If you don't you'll get a swat, bite or scratch...but she's not going to purr at you to make you stop, she might growl, but not purr.

Purring is a cats way of communicating. If she purrs because she doesn't like to be petted excessively then she is just telling you. But this is actually a good thing. At least she doesn't hiss or try to bite or claw you. She is politely telling you how she feels and that means she respects you.

Purring is not always a positive response. It is mostly for attention or a calling. An injured cat will also purr.
