I would have more (a bit more, that is, not much more) respect for faiths if they went no further than saying that there is a god and it would be beneficial to honour him, without all of the rigmarole of dogma, teachings, sacred books etc, which tend to be divisive, problematic and downright silly.

Yes of course "there is a god" is a conjecture, but even I, a poor misguided atheist, realise that this is a given for all reigions.

"There is a god" is an assumption. It's always bad to start an argument with an assumption.

No, there is a reality to what I believe that goes beyond conjecture. Even the fact that there is a God is proved to the individual who accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior. No dogma or doctrine of religion, just a dynamic relationship with the living God. Since God is indeed real, it is definitely beneficial to honor and worship Him. The only thing that keeps people from knowing is not accepting the possibility that Jesus is who He said He is, and that He did what He said He did. That exclusivity, and perhaps fear of being confronted by God, is the real divisive issue. Anyone willing to do this will know beyond conjecture the truth about God, and will find all the evidence they need as they enter into a new life with Him..

Good point, however,
the bible states, things that are beneficial, like quarantining the ill. In moder times that is not practiced, no wonder we still have outbreaks even with pills doctors give us.
Bible states the earth hangs upon nothing. Not until NASA first launched cameras in space was that proved true.
Of course the prophecies in the bible like the exact day King Cyrus was King and let the people of Israel go from Babylon. That was over 200 yrs before he was a King. The bible account says the king will be named Cyrus.
all this as you call it dogma is history proved accurate. So what ever your feelings are, the bible is reliable. It has show very valuable in its laws for mankind. It keep persons clean, from disease, and gave insight to science and other things.
Actually a lot of military around the world study how the Israelites waged war on bigger more powerful cities and nations.

If you say that it's beneficial to honour god, then the first question people will ask is 'how do I honour him?' And of course that leads to rules and dogma which would inevitably be written in a book which would be considered sacred. And because different people would have different ideas of how to honour god, you'd get different sacred books and people would argue and fight about which one is best.

Peace!
If all the pieces of a watch were placed in a can and the can shaken gently for a million years the watch would not be "accidentally" put together and running.
Even Albert Einstein, the greatest mind in the world, believed in God. He came back to Judaism.

No.
Its ALL conjecture and worse - I'm not going to accept there is a God without proof and an explanation for why he tried so hard to make intelligent people think he doesnt exist. Seems that if God does exist he's a bit malicious and sneaky.

u must have been reading some of my answers!!!!??
no?????
the best religions are the ones that are kept really, really simple.
One of the reasons I stopped going to Church is because it was becoming like a theology lesson.
honest answer.
do not let the windbags put you off what might be the most sensible decision of your life. all i usually say to people is to keep an open mind.
punch line.
If u have missed the boat when u die, it is too late.
I say things because I love people, not to score points. I would say the same thing to those around me that I love most, i.e. my children who know what I believe but I have allowed to make their own decisions or make them when they find out the truth.
never close the door and throw away the key. some day u might need it. Good motto??
all the best.

The philosophical position is that disbelief is the default but believing in the existence of a creator is acceptable. Anything other than that like believing in a personal God with human characteristics goes outwith the boundaries of philosophy and into the realm of fantasy given the lack of any evidence.

If you believe there is a God, then you would want to know more about Him. What does he have to say? What will He do?Thus there would prophets, writings, doctrines, and places where people of like faith could meet to study and learn, etc. PS. God is God, whether you respect Him or not. He doesn't need you to be God.....You need Him.

I'm a Taoist, but I don't see it as blind faith - I could be wrong - but even if I am wrong, no harm done!
I choose to believe, and I respect that other people have to choose what is right for them.
I understand what you are saying - it is a very valid point - but one that is likely to upset people. Shame really!

It's not our choice ... God sent prophets to teach us how to worship God .. that's the way God wants us to worship him.
And that's not silly.
