This is for breeders, and not BYB's please. Have any of you had experience with belly banding a newborn pup? This is a pup that had a loop of intenstine through that needed to be sewn up immediately after birth. The intestine was put back in and it was stitched up. We have used a small piece of gauze over the the belly and it was banded around the belly with cloth tape. The ***** was able to get the band off. Has anyone had a pup that they have banded and the ***** has left it alone, so she could not take the stiches out? What have you used?

JR thanks, but this is a newborn pup that is nursing. The ***** got the banding off, we replaced it , she had not touched the sutures. This pup is on antibiotics, and will probably need a hernia repair when he is close to 6 weeks old if he makes it. Most vets are not even attempting to repair this when a ***** pulls a loop of intesting through a pup at birth.

A friend that breeds Bernese had this problem last year. They also banded it and had to keep the pup away from the bit ch until feeding times. All feedings were supervised and then the pup was taken away again.
He had a repair at 7 weeks and went on to do fine.

I know of no vet that will do that repair on newborns. We live very near Cornell and they didn't want to do it until 6-8 weeks either.

I had this happen about four years ago to a pup with a first time dam. The dam was a real pain with the band. What I did( with my vets advice )was wrap the pup with gauze and apply bandguard ointment to the gause, then we cut that self sticking ace bandage and wrapped it over the gauze. It did help a lot but, not completely. I removed the pup several times a day and replaced it for feeding. However I did put it in with the dam at night. Dont forget you will need to stimulate the pup for elimination. Good Luck. My pup didnt have the repair surgery until eight weeks but she has done very well and you cant even see there was ever a problem.

Hi, not a breeder, but I have fostered and had almost the same situation. Same as everyone, we had to allow supervised nursings and make sure the pup was stimulated for eliminating. We also used a bit of ace bandage that we applied bitter apple cream on the outside of the bandage just to deter the mom long enough for us to move her mouth off the band. We never let the cream actually touch him, so I don't know if there would be an allergic reaction. It was a long 6 weeks to the repair surgery, but the pup made it and is (yeah I kept him, lol!)doing well.
Good Luck!- dd

We have used it with spays. They sell belly band at petsmart and I think its more humane than an e collar. However; if the pup needs to leave the stitches alone and belly band is not working get and e collar.

We have used the same type of procedure with male that want to mark everything. I use an ace bandage but they do sell a product called markout that you don't have to keep wrapping.

I hope your pup heals okay. I would also try some anti itch spary on the incision. That may help keep her from aggravating it.

Added: Your talking about the mom taking it off the baby? I would isolate her except for monitored feedings. Once the skin is starting to heal and seal I would let mom do her thing to clean it and help it heal quicker.

Added again:

Why won't they repair the hernia? We have had several over the years. It was what originally got us started doing prepubescent spay and neuters. They were repairing them and altering them at the same time so we decided to alter all pups between 6 and 8 weeks.

I would also try the belly band they sell at petsmart. its sticky gauze like the vets use. Not as easy for mom to tear and sometimes sticky things dogs don't like in their mouths. Mom natural reaction is to get things off the baby.

I would just make sure you keep a really close eye on the puppy. I don't think the mother will take the stitches out. If anything, she will lick the wound, which I would say is fine for the puppy. When we had our puppies dewclaws removed, the ***** licked the scabs and made them heal faster in my opinion. Good luck!
