Most modern mid-range (and up) camcorders will take an external microphone -- which you certainly want if you're after decent sound.

There is an excellent book available at Amazon on this topic, called "Producing Great Sound for Digital Video" by Jay Rose. I learned a LOT from the book.

The canon elura 100 is one camera i know of in that price range that offers a mic and headphone port. Its around $500 US i think and cheaper now, so probably 350 is a good estimate. However add 75-120 for a shotgun mic, i know you can get a rode videomic used or from certain retailers for that price. Or actually a better idea that wont force you to buy a new camera is to get a minidisc recorder and a shotgun mic, then record the sound separately (but bring a clapper of course! or clap yourself if you dont have one) and then synch it up, that should offer the best quality sound. Or if for some reason theres a guy there whos recording the band you could just get the sound off of him and synch it up (but this requires more work, as you dont have a clap to synch up to), and if this is the case, then you will get pro quality sound, without even having to worry about it because someone else recorded it. Hope this helps!

For 350 you can get a great shotgun mic. This will pick up sounds you're aiming at and not the sounds around. Check out a better video or music store for one that will interface with your camera.
