I put on some whitening gel earlier tonight, and my friend told me to check the expiration date and read the instructions. Which I didn't do either, and now my upper lip is really swollen...I'm almost positive it's from this gel. How do I go about treating this and making the swelling disappear??

The lip is most likely swollen due to be irritated by the chemicals in the whitening gel- which is a type of bleach, by the way. You can try taking Benadryl and applying ice to the lip to make it more comfortable and to help with the swelling/discomfort. It could be an allergic reaction, anything is possible, but with the mouth, reactions happen rather quickly if it is a true allergy. In any case, the Benadryl won't hurt, nor will the ice. In the future, read the directions and follow them- obviously- and if you have a repeat of the problem, quit using it all together and see the dentist for his recommendations.

Don't use the gel again. The swelling should dissipate on its own.Try taking aspirin or Advil for inflammation, that may help. If its a true allergic reaction, your tongue and throat may start to swell also. If that happens, call 9-11 immediately as a severe allergic reaction could kill you. Even if this is not the case, I would bring the gel to your doctor's office and have him check you out. Sometimes allergic reactions get worse over time. Swelling is a bad sign. You could be headed for anaphylactic shock. Your doctor may recommend an allergist to see what you may be reacting to. Don't take this lightly, get it checked out. Good luck.

Benadryl should help at least some with the reaction. One of my co workers is allergic to so many things that she has to keep Benadryl with her at all times and she is to take it at the first signs of a reaction. For her the first sign is usually swelling of the upper lip.

Yes, it can be very dangerous, it is how Elvis Presley died. It is mainly the downers that are dangerous, you quickly develop a tolerence for them and you have to take more and more to get the same effect. The problem is that they still can shut your body down, ie stop your breathingl, heart even tho you aren't getting the same effect with them. Taking uppers would therefore be bad for you as more downers would be needed to bring you back down enough to sleep.
