Within the sunni sect of te muslim faith, what is the role of the parents? I have 22 year old girl friend in egypt whose mother follows her around, won't trust her, and even won't let hr use the phone. She has no friends because of this. Is this normal?

not trying to stereo type. Just trying to understand if her parents are typical or atypical for this society. No offense meant. Trying to learn.

I'm a Muslim girl, 22 years old and i live in Egypt
i have finished my study in university and preparing a post graduate studies, I've lots of friends, we do every thing we want to do with in our religion direction as Muslim girls, we go out, use telephone, drive cars, studying, laughing...etc we are normal people living in a normal society but we must keep our religion direction and our customs and traditions as an Egyptian people. like any country that have it's own customs and traditions.
parents live with their children( girls or boys ) they take care of them by all means of that word care is, especially girls until they got married and then her husband take care of her because girls and women are a very precious in our religion and in our societies as Arab people and not vis versa.
i think that you must not make your own opinion about Egyptian people or Muslims or even ALL ARABS according to your friend.
their must be some thing wrong, and i think that here mother is afraid about her daughter, from any thing or any danger that may effect her.
she may be mistaken in here actions, and she don't know that this way may have a negative effect on her daughter, but she may be right in most cases.

To the person above, Ethnicity is something you inherit, while Religion is how you live. Clearly that girl is not a Muslim and neither is her family. Rather they are just Arabs or whatever ethnicity they are.
The role of parents is to take care of their daughter UNTIL MARRIAGE. They are trying to protect their daughter, and keep her chaste.
For Guys we are taken care of until we can return the favor (ie get an education and a job then we should take care of our parents)
Peace Be With You

Well are there circumstances surrounding this? I've known American girls who's parents won't let them go out and the like because of something they did.

the role of the parents is to be parents... i don't understand your question. so your friend has overprotective parents... does that mean you are going to brand all 1.5 billion Muslims based on your one friend in Egypt? com'on now... think!
