no,
it depends on how the dog has been brought up,
the worst dogs for violence are jack russels and nobody moans about them,
dogs that cause real damage when they bite are the ones that make headlines and therefore scare the public.
my girl got 2 and i reckon they would lick anyone to death rather thanbiting anyone

Good topical question!
First off, there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. I took on a year old border collie that would bite quite happily if it wasn't 'top dog' - but I have trained her out of it using traditional methods (see the Dogs Trust website for helpful information http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/information/).
I used to have a bull terrier cross that was wonderful with all the family but hated other dogs (always seen as a threat) so I never let her off the lead in public.
Staffies are lovely dogs and good with children - but they still need to be trained and they should NEVER be taken for walks by anyone who is not capable of keeping them away from other dogs.
It's not any particular breed that's a problem it's how that breed is trained. If a Rottweiler is taught to guard, then it will guard - no matter what. If a Pit Bull Terrier is trained to guard and fight, then it will do so no matter what.
It's a shame that here in the UK they stopped licensing for dogs and owners just don't take enough responsibility. I do think breeders should take more responsibility too for seeing that puppies are properly trained in good social behaviour.
I could go on .... I love dogs. I hate people who 'use' them to simply guard their home (without being a pet), to simply enhance their image, or to simply have something to bend to their will!
A dog is a great companion and gives back the love it receives - or sadly sometimes the violence!
Thanks for asking the question.

No way! As you say, they are rated one of the best family pets and I don't think there is any question of them being dragged into the whole 'pit bull type' frenzy.
Some ignorant people would like to ban most dogs but don't worry about them!
I do think that the UK needs to tighten up on poor dog owners though. Dog ownership is very high in the country and not at all regulated or controlled. Its about time dog owners were educated for the safety of both people and the poor mutts who suffer their foolish owners!

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are known as the Nanny dog, The Kennel club say there are only 2 breeds that are totally realiable around children 1 of those breeds is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier!! Says it all really.
I would say to anyone that is thinking of getting a Stafford to go to a local dog show & talk to owners. (they wil be only to willing to talk about the breed they love so much) The majority of show dog owners will be reputable & have health tested dogs.
The worst place to buy a dog is from the free ads on the web!!
No they should not be banned. Idiots that think they make them look hard need to be banned from owning any dog.

all this talk about banning certain breeds of dogs is stupid! its down to the owner of the dog on how the dog will turn out! if you want to train it as a killer it will be a killer! if you want it to be a family pet- it will be a family pet!!!! remember dogs dont have any way of protecting themselves- they cant talk! the only way they know of defending themselves is using there teeth and claws! no dog should be banned!! if we are going to ban certain dog breeds- then surely we should be also banning certain cultures from our country. Fair enough it is really really unfortunate what those dogs have done (i totally blame the owners) but what about the london bombings? they were commited by a members of a certain religious group- should we ban that group aswell? so in answer to your question... Staff Bull Terriers are beautiful dogs- and should be trained in the appropriate way- not to guard or kill! if you want somne sort of defence for your property- buy CCTV cameras or an alarm!! NO THEY SHOULD NOT BE BANNED!!!!

I have a staff male at the moment, and a female who passed away 7 years ago, both were from rescue centres, they did not have a good start in life, but i have never known such loving and affectionate dogs, I love them. it has to be the way they are handled and the owners should be trained with the dogs, people are so cruel to their animals!
I think we need to bring in some sort of licence to regulate breeders and buyers both. from experience I have seen the after affects of neglect and abuse people inflict on these dogs, they are intelligent and need affection and understanding, not ignorance. I would be heart broken if I thought they banned staffs as would my children, why is it the majority have to pay for the minority.

No - I don't think they should.
However,
It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure public safety and dog safety for anyone else walking in the street or walking there dogs etc. I am sure you are a considerate owner.
Pit Bulls should be banned though as they fight to the death. They don't allow the dog to submit and fight over - They are bred to kill the dog/person they are attacking. For this reason alone the ban is right. Don't you agree?

No, it should be bad owners that should be stopped from owning dogs of any breed, I have a Bull Terrier that has never attacked another dog in its 8years of life. It has fought with other dogs but they have approached her while she has been on her lead and the owners usually shout at me telling me that it should be muzzled even when I tell them not to let their dogs near as she will not tolerate any dog that comes close to her.
It is also a myth that fighting dogs are aggressive towards humans, this is simply not true as this behaviour is bred out of them as it is to dangerous to have a Pit bull that will attack its handler, these dogs were destroyed in times gone past and not allowed to breed. A true Pit bull is one of the most loyal and obedient breeds of dogs around today, it is the cross-breeding of pit bulls with other dogs that lead to aggressive Pits and also the banning of them that has led to undesirable owners owning them.

They are banned from the province that I live in. Any dogs living in the province before the law was passed are allowed to stay but there are conditions that must be adhered to. There is a group in Windsor called Advocates for the Underdog which has adopted the phrase "Punish the deed, not the breed". www.advocatesfortheunderdog.com
