Almost any other nut can be bought with the shell off or on, what makes Brazil Nuts so special that they can only be sold naked?

- I have found it hard/impossible to buy Brazil Nuts with the Shells on in the UK.
why is this?

Other answers have said that the shell is toxic, I understand that that is only partly true. A few years ago some highly intelligent (???)scientist was said to have discovered that the skin between the fruit and the shell had the ability to cause cancer. However, I understand that to have any effect you would have to consume several tons of them.. a feat beyond the average human being!!!
Obviously the scientist was nuts!!!

In addition to the fact that the shell is toxic, it's hard as hell to break! When I was a kid, we used to buy unshelled mixed nuts at the grocery store, and I'd be able to shell most of them with an ordinary nutcracker - but I'd have to get my dad's HAMMER to open a Brazil nut!

I've never had any problem buying brazil nuts with the shell on. I have had problems getting the shell off though...

The poison in unroasted nuts (e.g., cashews) is negligible compared to the destruction of nutritional value that occurs on heating food above 116 degrees F. Surely you must have noted the millions of people who have eaten cooked food and are dying on the streets.

You can get them and then use the shells (inside) to rub into scratches on your wooden furniture as it will erase the scratch! However, as the other answers say - brute strength and ignorance is the way to crack said nut!

Because the shell is stupidly hard to break, same as Macadamia nuts.

Where do you live that you can't buy them in the shell? I live in the state of Texas and buy them all of the time with the shell on.

Because Brazilians come out of their shell quickly upon meeting them and I hear the women look good naked.

You can get brazils with shells on and I think they are better,the ones sold unshelled in packets seem to be drier and harder.
