Man oh man. What OS-Windows 9x, XP, Linux? What media player-WIndows Media Player, WinAmp, BSPlayer? What type of video-mpeg2, mpeg4, avi?
Here are some suggestions:
1:If you downloaded the vid, try to redownload it. It may be corrupt. Or re-rip if you ripped it. Data corruption is a part of PC life.
2:Try the VLC Media Player. It's free and is far superior to WMP and it comes with it's own codecs. VLC will play just about anything even some corrupted files. While you're at it get Media Player Classic. It's also free and far better than WMP.
3:Most but not all media players will report not having a codec, but not all. If it's an .avi get GSpot. No, nasty minded! It's a little free app that identifies the codec needed to play avi's. It gives a ton more info but what you need to start is the codec. Most importantly it will tell you if you have the codec needed.
4:You can download the codec free most of the time. The DivX codec, for example is free. The converter software aint. If you cant identify the exact codec, try free-codecs.com and get the klitecodecpack, it has them all.
All in all, it's probably a bad copy. The audio is usually separate from the video. You should get one or the other. Both is very likely a bad/corrupted copy.

Good luck!
