A friend gave me a wireless broadband router from lynks (or something like that). Is there any use for this if you have a dial up connection?

Not really, but u could always use it as a network switch or hub if u had more than one computer. Ideal for file or printer sharing.
Also there is lots of these fancy Media players out now, that connect to your TV and HiFi and use the wireless connection on your PC to stream Audio and Video from your Harddrive. Have a look on here to see what i am talking about..
