My spanish speaking friends speak spanish only to their babies... until the children are in pre-school. Then they work in English. Now that the kids are in grade school, they speak in English in public and Spanish at home. That keeps the kids speaking both languages fluently.

Children learn so quickly that if they are raised in a bilingual household it is relatively easy for them to pick up both languages. Even if it isn't a bilingual home, it is encouraged that you introduce a new language to a young child as this will be a huge beneift to them in later years.

to have a bilingual child first teach them a language foreign to english, then teach them english after they got the hang of the other language. Children are like sponges they pick up things quick especially the young ones.

Well i know 4 languages. It so happened that we moved away from our home town (in india) when i was very small. So my parents spoke one language n my friends at school spoke another. English was a compulsary language (as a language subject in school coz its official language). So this way i got to learn 3 languages as a little girl. Now i work in a different region where none of these 3 languages are spoken so i have learned 4th language as well...
Most people in india are bilingual, they know hindi/english and their regional language. Hindi is national language of India and English is used for formal purposes. Besides that, we have about 25 regional languages.

They speak English at home and are taught another language in school.
They have found it is easier to teach grade school students a foreign language than high school students
