Adjustable gastric banding is a form of restrictive weight loss surgery (bariatrics) designed for obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater - or between 35 – 40 with those who have co-morbidities that are known to improve with weight loss. The gastric band is an inflatable silicone prosthetic device which is placed around the top portion of the stomach via keyhole surgery laparoscopic surgery.

Both of my Aunts had this done. Well, one had the band, other had the by-pass where they actually take part of the stomache out. It worked well for them, but I do remember them saying the recovery from the surgery was pretty long and tough. After they had it they dropped at least 200lbs each. It has really improved their lives. They can have jobs now, and play with their grandkids.
The one downfall is that if you don't keep eating small amounts the band can slip and you can gain the weight back. Overall though.... I have to say I approve. I love both my aunts very much and its great to see them looking so much better, and being so much more active!
Just remember this is for the severly obese who can't loose it any other way. =)

I don't have one but i know how they work
basically the band is put around your stomach, so that the stomach is divided in two parts. the upper one is smaller and the lower is bigger. this will force you to only eat a little bit at a time otherwise you will throw up.
it takes discipline to have it, it's NOT a quick and easy solution.
Think twice before even considering speaking with a bariatric surgeon. You won't be able to eat a big meal if you have it done, even a mere OCCASIONAL big meal (like Christmas) without gagging or throwing up.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

I know a lot of people who have had the band fitted and have lost weight successfully. Have a look at weightloss surgery websites where you can read about people's experiences. A band is inserted around the stomach laproscopically (via keyhole surgery) which restricts the amount of food you can eat.
