The M-16A2 is still used by the military in units that are not directly involved in combat operations. The M-4 is used by combat units for several reasons.
- smaller and lighter
- easier to use in urban areas
- M-4 has the rail system which allows you to configure the weapon with different attachments quickly.

I'm a US Marine. The M-16 is still in use although what has changed is the hand guards, we now have rails. Wit the rail system you can attach many new sighting systems for night or day, hand grips, and mounted surefire lights, and much more. We now have the M-16 A4 which is the old rifle with modified hand guards and the M4 a smaller weapon with the same functions and firing distance of the M-16 which is found in your infantry units. The reason for the change is the type of war we fight now. Which is more URBAN compared to yesterdays Jungle Warfare. There for using the the M-4 and the new attachable sighting system are better suited for the urban environment. NOTE although it may be smaller after attaching all the new equipment it does become heavier

The m-16 is still in use , the m-4 is the army's more widely used weapon now because of its smaller size . It eventually will replace the m-16 . However the m-16 will be around for quite a while .

Both services issue either the M-4, M-16A4, or m16A2. All can be configured with a rail and optics. The M-4 is a bit handier though, especially in tight spaces, but with good training, a long gun works the same. So basically it depends on the unit and your MOS. The right tool for the specific job..

The M4 is a M16 with a shorter barrel. its a variant not a replacement.
Its easier to use in tight areas like houses and bradleys.

The eventual replacor of the M16/M4 is the objective series of weopon. I dont know how fare they have developed it or if it is canceled. Johan
