I have just moved into a new house and Im unable to get my car in the garage (its a VW golf new shape). The builders are telling me that its the required minimum width and it will cost to widen. Surly this can't be right??

Check with your towns building inspector or look up the towns building codes. It will be listed there. I believe the smallest garage door is 8ft. That is not to say there are not smaller doors available for sheds.

You did not check the garage before moving in? Check local building codes empty all the items stored in the garage. Or buy a Honda Fit Toyota Yaris Swatch Smart Car. I cannot beleave that builder can even sell houses with micro size garages. It is a soft reality market lots of other houses.

I don't think there is a minimum size. But are you sure where you are trying to park isn't for a golf cart? Some houses near courses have small garages built into the house for golf carts.
