I lived in NYC for many years and never had a problem with safety. All of Manhattan is safe (except obscure alleyways where you shouldn't be anyway!), as is the more expensive, poshy neighborhoods in other areas - like Park Slope in Brooklyn.

What everyone else said is true - don't flash money, use common sense. And please don't look like a tourist. Wear fashionable clothes (meaning don't go in a flannel shirt and a deer hunting cap with a camera strung around your neck while gauking at the "really tall buildings") so you blend in.

Someone suggested you stay around Midtown. That's where all the other tourists will be. If you want to see New York like a New Yorker go to the West Village, Chelsea and SoHo. Much more interesting. The only thing in Midtown are the Broadway Theaters (great if you want to take in a show) and overpriced touristy restaurants. There's much more color and fun downtown.

Whatever you do, have a blast. New York is the coolest city in the world!

New York is just as safe or unsafe as any big city in the world. With just a few simple precautions you can survive anywhere in the world, including New York:

1. beware of pick pockets. Keep valuables out of sight in difficult to access places.

2. Look around. Not only will you see more of your environment, but it should also alert you to somebody following you. Furtermore it shows to the 'bad guys' that you are paying attention - and they will move on.

3. Move in groups when possible. Avoid lonely alleyways when you're alone, especially after dark.

4. When you see something or somebody you don't trust, cross the street, walk the other way, etc. Get into the vicinity of other people.

This will rule out 99% of the chances of getting attacked. There is no guarantee, but where is?

I've been a couple of times to New York, driven a car there and had a good time. Just play safe and you will be ok and you will have a great time!

New York City is safe. Visit main stream areas. Don't flash money around. Use common sense.

Try and get in some conversations with New Yorkers. They are great people. Read Time out York. It is a weekly guide that lists what is going on and where each week.

Of course! You need to know how to get around and you need to use common sense. You may have a problem finding a hotel at your age. You'll have to do some searching around, but with the Internet, that's fairly easy. Get a guidebook at your library or bookstore or use the on-line versions. Be sure you know how to use the subway/bus system [maps/info in any guidebook or use the MTA website].

I too have heard that, but then I was assured that is it very safe in the city, I went and loved it. I've been back four times so far and planning to go again...My friend in NYC told me to stay in mid-town or upper east side of town. As to any place you go, you should always be aware of your surrounding. Go and you'll enjoy yourself and I'm sure you'll want to go back....

Have fun and be safe
