I live in Khobar.. its the most modern westernized area in all SAudiARabia.. and a hop skip and jump (30min drive) to Bahrain which is mostly british customs and culture.. Its very hospitable these days.. Khobar I mean.. You'll like it.. You dont have to confine yourself to your housing compounds.. There are so many new shopping malls these days, there are many places to go.. Also many organized activities by foreigners getting together, theres always someplace to go and something to do.. The taxi system is excellent.. Nowadays with all the competition of shops.. you can just about find all the name brands you are familiar with in the west.. You just wont find any booze, or disco's.. but if you are into that sort of thing. Bahrain is your weekend destination.. or even further out. go to Dubai for a weekend..

It used to be ok if you were a male, but a bit boring, However, that was long time ago, so god knows what to expect now. I did some restoration work down there, so was not living in the compounds off the Dammam-Khobar Highway.
I did however visit the Oasis Compound - the one the terroists hit. The compound was nice, it had two restaurants and a health club that were popular with both the Saudis and expats.
I hope the money is good, because it is a bit of a risk these days, you in the oil trade?

There are a bunch of British people over there, so you probably won't lack for company. You'll be spending most of your time behind the walls of whatever compound you're living in, so find one that has your preferred amenities.
Make sure you get a comfortable, reliable car as you'll most likely be heading across the Causeway to Bahrain every chance you get!
