Symbolic play skills and language development go hand in hand early on. Later, play helps children synthesize what they are learning from the world around them and it helps them relax. When my son had two hours of HW a night in the 4th grade, he was stressed out and depressed much of the time. The worst thing we can do is to take away recess at school and then over-schedule our poor kids with too many extracurricular activities plus HW! They need to play to grow and be happy.

Play supports children learning in many ways as when children play they are still learning i.e. playing in the home corner counting plates recognising colours, developing their numeracy skills and so on.
Also whilst they are dressing up, doing role play they are imitating others therefore developing their communication skills as they tend to talk in the same way a certain person does, moreover they develop their social skills as they are interacting with other children.
There are mnay more resons....

It gets to show kids that to learn is fun! And for humans learning is just like memories and if a child remembers playing a game that contains learning tools and devices it will stick with them and will be able to acknowledge what the learned in other scenarios.

Letting your child play is a great part of their learning. Cooperative play teaches your child how to deal with other children and manners. Art play teaches them they're colors, different textures of paint and oils, and how to cut and paste. There are SO many types of play, and all of them have a big influence on your child's learning.
