Digital?? Nothing even close to $300 new, you might find a used older model in good shape.

Film? Way more possibilities! New: A Canon Rebel with consumer lens can be had in Wallyworld or about any big box retailer. You can check prices, but I think they are around $250.

You can find loads of used SLR film cameras for pennies on the dollar. I would look for a Nikon F100 in good shape for about that price, maybe a little more. Check www.keh.com for used gear, they are honest, reliable, and have a generous return policy.
Also eBay, just be careful, pay with a credit card through PayPal, and check seller ratings.

Good luck!

Digital? Shop used... By the time you buy a camera body, lens and memory card, you will be about double that to get started.
