It could be the strange sounds or tastes or perhaps she connects that sound/smell with toys.
Cats don't like bowls- I run the shower for a while on cold and leave some water on the shower floor-(door propped open of course) and my cats will lap it up- like they do a puddle outdoors.
Cats are silly and fussy.
But with water- extra fussy.
You could try keeping chilled water for it in the fridge. My cat has- but she's spoilt and my parents have no kids at home (my cat livces with them).

My kitties did this when we first got their water fountain. I think they thought it was some sort of weird aquatic toy at first, and after they figured out that the soft hum of the motor wasn't a mouse, they started drinking from it. Try turning the pump off and let her get accustomed to it being there, the water will fill up as she drinks it, then after a while, try it with the pump on. She should adjust to it.

It sounds like your kitty wants to play with the water.
My cat pushes his bowl around when the light in the laundry room (where he keep his food and water) is on. I think he sees the reflection of the light and tries to catch it. He also sticks his paw in the water.

I can't tell you why, but my husband and I just put down a small rug and a plastic mat with a lip around it. Some cats like to play with water...and our kitten is included. She will flood our damn house. Your cat will drink, though.

One of my cats does that too. I've been watching her and the reason she does it is that she likes to see the refractions of light reflecting off the water.

She's drinking the water unless she's getting it from the toilet? I think she's playing with it because the motor noise has her curious to find it. Turn it off until mealtime and while she eats, turn it on again to get her used to it.
