I work for an airline in check in and If you gave me £1 for everytime someone asked me for a free upgrade then i could retire a very wealthy lady. The best way is dont ask because you have to think how many people the checkin agent has had the question asked to them thru their day, if you are polite well dressed and dont badger the agent for an upgrade you may well be chosen. however the airlines generally look after their regular travellers first before they consider anyone else but that is only if a flight is oversold otherwise if there are seats empty the airline can not justify the upgrade. enjoy your holiday and remember dont pester the check in agent the more you ask the less likely u will get it.

It's really difficult to get free upgrades these days as airlines have caught on to the idea that they can "sell" upgrades instead. We have been offered the chance to buy an upgrade on flights to the US a couple of times now (usually around $100 so worth it if you can afford it). It might still be possible to get it for free though - dress smartly, travel alone, and be ultra-polite to the check-in assistant, use your frequent flyer card if you have one and politely enquire whether they will be upgrading anyone on the flight today.

It is difficult to get one these days, without paying the extra, but the following will help you along the way - dress smart, be polite, and start the sentence by saying:"I don't mean to be cheeky, but is there a chance of a free upgrade, I would really appreaciate it". By admitting you are being 'cheeky', the check in agents will respect you more, believe me (we are tough!). It may not work purely because sometimes the decision is left in the hands of the airline rep, but sometimes we may just upgrade you... you never know.

Upgrades are usually given when economy class is overbooked and they need to fill up the 1st class to get everyone on the plane - it does not happen on every flight, only occasionally. They will choose the most respectable people in the queue so if you dress nicely and carry a briefcase you have more of a chance than someone in a t-shirt and jeans with a backpack.

Look the part, be polite and enquire. If you don't ask, you won't get.
