Female cats are spayed and male cats are neutered.
The cost can range from $50 on up. In Dallas they have a nickel neuter, which means all male cats are neutered for 5 cents. Anything else, like rabies vaccination, is at a lower cost.
Call your local humane society and they can help you with finding a lower cost sterilization.

In the UK if you are on certain benefits like housing benefit or council tax benefit if you contact the Cats Protection they will give you a voucher towards the cost of spaying, we had a female done last May and cost including the voucher was £36.00. Many vets charge various prices so ask around, or if you live near a Blue Cross or PDSA centre they may do it for free.

I took my cats to the Humane Society of New York (cheapest place I could find) The surgery alone was $35 plus $3 for 'medical waste'. Since my cat was 6 years old, she needed a separate appointment for a partial blood test before the surgery. That office visit was $30, plus $50 for the blood test and another dollar for 'medical waste'. It ended up being $118 because of her age.
I took in another cat who was over 7 years old and the total came to $158 since she needed FULL blood work ($66) and 'fluids' during surgery ($15). Again, if she had been under 6 years old, it would have been between $40-70.

You can't have a female cat neutered, but you can have them spayed.....
My vet charges $120 for scalpel surgery and $150 for laser surgery. You may be able to find a reduced cost or low cost spay neuter clinic in your area.

We charge $125.00 for a cat to be spayed. Most veterinary clinics will also require an exam prior to the surgery and vaccines up to date.
FYI, technically, both males and females can be "neutered", or females are "spayed" and males are "castrated".

It really depends on what area you live in. I paid $45 last December for my girl to be neutered.

Because your cat will have to go under anesthisea , most vets require blood work first to make sure nothing else is wrong. Costs anywhere from $100-&250.
