My cat is an indoor out door cat. He loves going outside, but about a month ago he came in and he had a one inch mark on his rear where all the fur had been taken off and the skin had been hurt as if it were burnt or cut badly. It wasn't exactly like a bite mark or anything it seemed almost like a burn of some sorts. He got better after a few days and he really had no problems except he scared more easily. Now recently we noticed he has another mark this time on his abdamon between his legs there is a large spot of mising fur but there is only a small scratch but it is a little deep. The two wounds are very different except they both have hair removed from the areas. What could be causing this, he is crying so much for us to let him outside but we don't want to until we feel he is safe.

My cat is a neutered mail...he is pretty smart but also very playful, my neighborhood does have a number of cats and he has been known to have problems with one of them. I want whats best for my cat but at the same time dont want to have him cooped up inside all day, I think that it kills its spirit.

i had the same problem with one of my cats (who is now in a better place.) he got marks and cuts and then he got better but unfotunatley, he got run over. Our girl cat had just given birth to three beautiful boys, and six weeks later she and the other cat were run over. We didn't want what happened to the cats to happen to these boys. So we got a couple of friend and put a gate around a small portion of our backyard like a dog run. Its simple just dig some holes around an area with lots of grass, fill it up with cement, put fence posts in it, put fence around it and cover the top with mesh and make sure there are no holes over 1/4 of a foot anywhere. this way, he'll get out and be protected.

I have an indoor/outdoor cat. And, I have had many pets (dogs & cats) throughout my life that have been indoor/outdoor. Cats fight with other cats...especially males. Also, cats tend to play with and kill/hunt other animals such as voles, mice, rats, birds, squirrels..etc..I even had had a cat the hunted and killed a rabbit once. I know some would freak at this--but this is just the nature of the beast.
It sounds like the last war wound was made by a rat. Rodents that are smaller than the cat tend to bite the legs or adomen areas. I know you worry about your cat...that he is a part of your family...like a child. But, just as children, I hold the opinion that they are their own creatures and that you will, when they grow up have to release the apron string, per se..and I do hold the opinion that keeping a cat indoors (completely) is somewhat inhumane...yet, I understand the idea of keeping a cat completely indoors if you live in a city.
Cats do learn (to some extent) and they learn to become better hunters and protect their territories. My cat has a specific territory...its interesting. The best thing that I can advise is to just keep looking over your cat, deworm them, give it tags and a flea collar (you might even forgo the flea collar and apply a 3-6 month anti-flea and tick medication that is placed directly on the skin), look for ticks, fleas and ear mites...and ensure that he gets his shots (rabbies) and that any wounds heal well and don't become infected.

unfortunatley your cat thinks its okay to go outside and male cats are very territorial. He is getting in fights with other cats I am thinking in his territory or also he is hunting squirrels and rabbits which are fighting back. ect ect. I can not tell you how to stop the cat from going outside all I can say that is a bad habit that i don't know if you can break. Just keep taking him to the vet and get check ups and shots in case he is getting infections or anyother communicable diseases cats can give to one another. Hinde sight iss always 20/20 and of course not ever letting a cat go outside is best for thier health. I have always had cats that were indoor only. I did have a cat get outside once was gone for 2 days came home and died in 3 days because she had drank antifreeze Im assuming from the road cause a car leaked it out. There are so many dangers for a domestic cat outside. If your male cat is not fixed I suggest that too. That may make his urge to roam not be so strong. Unfortunatly thats all i can advise on this issue. I hope all goes well for you and Good luck!

The biggest reason that changed my attitude about keeping cats indoors was the fact that neighbors will abuse your pets. If they don't like them on their cars, in their gardens then they will put an end to it and most of the time that means your cat will suffer the consequences.
I used to believe that cats should have the freedom to come and go but not now. Now my cats live to the ripe old age of 23 and 17. Both of them are very healthy and happy...content to live indoors.
There are people that would drive out of their way just to run over a cat so I will not allow my furbabies to roam the dangerous streets of today.

He's probably fighting. One of my cats is a fighter and so is a cat down the block - he comes back with scratches and patches missing sometimes. It's probably another cat; if it was something really ugly (like a raccoon or wolf or coyote, or whatever else is around) he probably wouldn't come back at all.
I don't know - our cats are indoor/outdoor too, but sometimes we'll keep them in for a spell - like when we start hearing coyotes regularly. Better safe than sorry - maybe keep him in for a week? Hope it gets better!

Looks like a cat is in heat. If a male cat, he will definitely want to go outside and be fighting with the other cats to be the one to get that nookie first. If a female, when they get in heat, other male cats will try to get some but she will fight with them. Only when she is ready will she let the cat get her. Also, a couple of days before and a couple of days after she gets off heat will she have problems. That is all I can think of. My cat got gashes from this, I know.

Sounds like he has been fighting. Make sure your cat is neutered. That is probably why he want to go out so bad. Also take him to the vet. to have it checked out. Wounds on cats tend to abscess and if left alone without anitbiotics it could cause many other problems.

If you let your cat out they will get hurt. We have a tom cat that came home with a snake bite on his face about two months ago and it took forever to heal with two rounds of antibiotics. My other cat she never gets hurt outside, but she doesn't let anyone near her. They are animals and they will get hurt. I have lost one cat because his tail and spinal column got pulled apart at the base of the tail. You could only see the seperation on an xray and we had to put him down. They get hurt there isn't a way to protect him unless you keep him in, but he will get louder.

It could be that someone in your neighborhood is abusing him. If your cat is friendly, he may be putting himself in danger and not realizing it. Since he really wants to go outside, try using a harness on him and going outside with him. He will be safe with you with him.

When people let their cats outside, why do they wonder what happened to them when they come home hurt?! If you let them out, guess what???? Something bad can happen! They get hit by cars, people abuse them, they get attacked by other animals. Need more reasons to keep him inside????
