All those religious people vying with each other to convert others to the "truth", when increasing numbers see religion for what it is - illogical wishful thinking which paralyses the mind.

Eng. Mohamad, sorry to disappoint, but acres of muslim texts written by dessicated camel-herders will not convert me. Nice try.

The skill in orienteering lies in the routes chosen and the tactics applied . It can be really , really , really annoying when some clever twerp tries to tell you that you would be better off taking a left turn here or throwing a right there when you just know beyond a shadow of doubt that the next set of map references is over the next precipice , a mere hop and skip away .
Like when you lose your car keys or wallet ,who needs that voice in your ear saying "when did you last have them", arghh!
If we did not believe God was necessary we would not search for him, but if we did not search for him how would we know if he was or was not necessary , Hmm..
Involvement in sport is preferable to spectator sport , that way we all become tiresome "experts" .
I was never much good at sport but once when I was a kid I caught an uncatchable ball at cricket , making me , the kid that couldn't play sport a momentary sporting hero . I try to put that far distant memory behind me but my wishful thinking keeps catching up with me .
Religions come in all shapes and sizes some less attractive than others , pay your money and take your choice , or don't bother .
Every generation will have the same debates , you will never put it behind you because it is right there in front of you .

This is an old question which remains valid. Religion has been with mankind in one or another form since the beginning. It is true that in the name of religion many atrocities have been carried out. It is true that many people have abused their positions of authority. In the main, religion is a geographical/cultural affair IE. children tend to follow the religion of their family.

Though not very religious myself, I understand why people need it. It gives shape, understanding and support to many. Perhaps one day the world will be without religion and as Bonhoeffer said, "with Christ in the midst of us" meaning a world with spirituality outside of 'the church'. But clearly a religious free world does not, i hope, suggest a world where man rejects 'God' and the spiritual values which religion have tried to instill. But the world for now is full of hate and greed, so I feel it is wrong for 'non-believers' to attack the 'Faiths'. The world as a whole is not ready to turn its back on organised religion. Until it is, people (in the west at least) are free to worship, or not. In the meantime I shall respect most 'religions' and stumble forward on my own spiritual journey. Good luck to you on yours.

Worse than unnecessary! The original purpose was to fill the gap in our understanding of the universe. As that gap has closed, we're left with an even bigger question: If you close the gap with "god" then you have to explain how god was created! Do we create a "god-god"? We now have science, biorythms, horoscopes, and the internet to fill any gaps in our lives. Now, if someone could explain how we've evolved to be so succcessful despite (not because of) religion, we could finally close the book on this one.

I totally agree that religion should be done away with
as a primitive form of expression that is the cause for more suffering than anything else.

That said we are spiritual whether we like that or not

and as such it's about time we dealt with that honestly

instead of cramming laughable dogma down on young minds..

God is never changing, so who are we to put Him behind us? Religion for you maybe simply a fad or old fashioned. But to us who believe, how can the truth be old fashioned? Either it's true or it's not. I believe God is true, therefore He is the same as He always was and always will be. Truth doesn't change, nor does it date.

He made the heavens and the earth, how anybody could feel superior to God is beyond me. We're nothing but dust without Him.

He is as necessary to us as breathing. And far moreso, if we wish to have eternal life.

god (if there is a god) is definatly not unnecassary now, because believeing in him creats comfort and strenght for millions. what is unneccassary is the extremists who believe their god (the same one who states in his holy book'love thy neighbour and be kind') wants them to kill others in his name. surely thats just sick minded people looking for a cause to kill for and are willing to turn to something that has such good intentions as a religion that was created to comfort and guide.

How arrogant man has become to think he doesn't need God anymore. Religion is not the way to God. Jesus said of Himself, I am the way. It is not a religion that is important, it's a relationship with God. Jesus Christ makes that possible. Make an effort to get to know him.

God is always necessary and an integral part of our life. A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months, or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain life for a week. We must draw upon God's boundless store of grace from day to day as we need it.
