There is no difference - 2 different names for the same dog. It is said that they were called Alsations after the war because people would not use the correct name of German Shepherd. xxxx

Alsatian is the correct spelling. And the GSD and the Alsatian are one and the same. During and just after the War in the UK, anything remotely 'German' was shunned (even our Royal family became the Windsors, when they are actually of German origins), and Alsatian was used. Now we are not as sensitive, and a return to the correct German Shepherd Dog has been made.

no difference it is the same breed. When Germany was at war the breed name was changed because people would not but anything with German on it so the dogs became known as Alsatians but now the true name is being reestablished German Shepherd Dog probably the best dogs in the world with the right owners.

Basically the breed originally started out as a German Shepherd dog, changed to Alsatian, and then back to German Shepherd dog. This has led to some confusion amongst non-experts over which term to use.
Although the breed of dog started life in Germany, hence one of its names, at the end of the War it was thought that the breed would not flourish were the word German to appear in its name and it was therefore decided to call the breed the Alsatian Wolf Dog after the German-French border area of Alsace-Lorraine.
Obviously 'wolf dog' isn't a great name for a dog, that amongst other things makes a great family pet, and this was dropped too.
In 1977, following numerous campaigns by breeders the name of the breed was changed back to the German Shepherd Dog by which it is known in the USA, Australia, and most other countries.

there is no difference it is the same breed. Used to be called German shepherd until the war when the name was changed due to bad feeling against anything germans,So they were then called Alsatian. Then in the 1980's, the kennel club changed the name back to German shepherd dog.
In Germany, where I grew up, they are used as we use collies over here, to herd sheep hence the name.

They come from a part of France, where they speak Alsatian (Alsatian: Elsässerditsch, French Alsacien, German Elsässisch) - it is a Low Alemannic German dialect spoken in Alsace, a region in eastern France which has passed between French and German control many times.
so they are Alsatian in French, German Shepherds in German, and since we have a German Royal Family in the UK, we used the name German Shepherd. It was bred originally for herding and guarding sheep. It's origins can be dated back to the 1700's.
The Dog is also known by the name Deutscher Schaferhund. The two World Wars influenced the history of this dog. The association with Germany was unpopular following the wars, even our Royal family changed thier name from Saxe-Coburg to Windsor- and the breed was therefore given the name of the Alsatian Wolf Dog after the French (taken as part of the WWI treaty from Germany) border area of Alsace-Lorraine.
The term 'Wolf Dog' was then dropped as it was believed that this would also prove to be unpopular. Finally, in 1977, the breed name was changed back to the German Shepherd Dog.

No difference. They were known as German Shepherds until the first world war and the name was then changed to delete the word German. It doggie circles they have now reverted to German Shepherds again. Just hope the dogs are not too confused by all this.

The dog originated from Germany. During the war the Brits did not use the German name so they called it an alsation. Beautiful dog too.
