It would depend on how sensible a 22 year old you are and what sort of car you'd like. If you had sense you'd go for something like a Toyota Avensis, for £5000 you'd pick up a 3-4yr old model. Not a sexy car but a nice car, Toyota have always been at the top of all customer satisfaction and reliability surveys, particularly JD Power. At 22 you want something reliable which you can build your no claims up on on.

Do check with the insurance company. Rates can vary $100/month for the same driver depending on the car. I'd put a chunk of that $8,000 down on a new one as I think people don't sell off a good car. My brother just bought (Thursday) a new Focus SE with ac, tilt and cruise, and appearance package for $12,400. Insurance was a little high though. Another thought is to check with your local churches. Father-in-law bought a great Cadillac with low miles that an elderly lady donated to the church upon her death.
Just my 2 cents.

You could get a 2003 (03 Reg) Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SE
They are very nice looking cars, a little bit different and they drive really well. Mine (an older model) is very reliably - 160,000 miles and only needed the AA once, and they was because I left the lights on :D
They are about £8000 second hand :)

2nd hand Porsche 944 turbo (250bhp model) - you can chip it and install a boost enhancer for about £500 then you have fantastic performance. 0-60 in 5 secs and 175mph (as standard it will do 5.5 secs and 165mph). You can get cheap classic car insurance too

if its his first car and hes 22 i would check with insurance companies before buying anything, i would say something like a focus or astra TD as you get a nippy car thats economical and diesiels are usually cheaper to insure. my young brother is 21 and he had a few probs finding resonable insurance (if you can ever call car insurance resonable!)

Toyota pickup with a shell. Good gas mileage. You can haul stuff, and make in the back with a girl.
