As a rule, yes. It could be traced to Colonial times when having a British accent meant you came from the Mother Country with all its power and sophistication! For a long time, because of its long theatrical traditions, Britain sent to America some of the best actors and actresses and so, the British accent signified glamor and glitz. Explorers and scholars from the UK lectured worldwide, including in the US, so the accent came to denote education and class.
In recent decades, British entertainers from the working class background such as Michael Caine, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones etc... even made the Liverpool and Cockney accents popular here. We view it as earthy and no-nonsense and even entertaining and amusing (the Gecko in the Geico commercials...)

It appears that most Americans like-or fancy something out of the ordinary. It seems that American TV is an indicator of what accents are in vogue at the time. I believe that because the British and others in the UK speak a variation of English that Americans can understand that TV producers prefer characters that speak the Queen's English over those of Spanish, Japanese, or that New England-Boston accent.

No offence to British people but I think there accent when it comes to English sounds so old and boring it really does and so low. I prefer and American accent over a British. But another accent that gets on my nerves is Australian accents no offence but thats just my opinion. The best english accent I think are kiwi's. I am not a kiwi though but I heard it and it is lovely not to high not to low just right.

Proper British English is better than American English. The language most Americans speak is only called English for convenience. An educated British accent is rather nice.

Some do and some do not, but there is a perceived notion that a British accent adds an air of "nobility" to commercial advertising, so you will often hear a British accent in American commercials. This refers more to the accent of the "upper crust" and not necessarily a "Cockney" type accent. That might reflect more of a "happy go lucky" kind of image here.

I think no. Many British wants to speak with American accent but they find it hard. Like me I'm a Filipino I know how to speak both accents. But in my opinion Americans dont fancy British coz british accent sucks especially Scottish accent. They sounds weird. American accent is better.

I don't know about everyone else, but I personally love it. I can't say just why, I just love the way it sounds. My friend Alun gets hit on all the time because he's British, though it sometimes makes him uncomfortable.
