She is a really loving cat but when we are settled on the sofa she turns and tries to bite me, it seems like something possesses her and then she starts darting around the house and attacking the carpet, we have no other pets, but she is a very timid cat and is startled by the slightest noise or movement, we did have her from the RSPCA.

Cat's do as they like whenever they can! Call a dog, and it will come to you. Call a cat, and it'll send you a postcard telling you when it's going to!

Your cat could have had bad experiences before you homed him/her, or could be a little 'feral'. I have a cat, I took him in just over a year ago, he was 13 with a progressive back condition. He can be a very grumpy cat, like you say, you may stroke the cat a few times then all of a sudden you see them tense up and if you don't stop, well your likely to get swiped and a nasty growl. But the other side of the coin is that he is one of the friendliest cats I've ever had, he goes up and fusses everyone to say hello, and he really is quite loving.

He gets told off if he does swipe, and he knows he's been bad as he runs off, then comes back a few minutes later. I don't think telling the cat off is bad, they soon understand right from wrong, and what is more they really don't like to upset you! You have to accept them warts and all as they are independent, but there is also room to train them, be firm and fair. As they get older they tend to get meeker too, they need you more and realise that.

She sounds like she wants attention and wants to play. It's normal for cats to bite their toys when they play. Maybe she's biting your hand because she thinks it's a toy? Try giving her a cat toy she can attack and chew on. She might be bored sometimes. That's often the case when cats go on wild running sprees that are out of character. I'd just play with her a bit more to get some energgy out.

It depends on her age but also how much time you spend with her. Cats get bored very quickly especially of you're not at home during the day and naughty behaviour follows. My eldest cat was a stray kitten and she was scared of everything. She also use to bite and hiss and destroy things even though you could tell she was not nasty by nature.

We gave her a lot of love but also ensured that we spent time playing with her every day (and we still do). After a year we even got another kitten and we had to keep them separate for 6 months whenever we were not at home since she was hissing all the time (we managed to get a kitten who wasn't scared of anything but we had to wait she was big enough to defend herself). But she is now best friend with the other cat, she does not hiss, does not bite, go to say hello to people (even though she stays wary). She is very sweet and rarely naughty.

The key word with cats is always Patience. And it is also important to give them a routine. Cats are highly adaptable but they like their routine and keep busy. I thought for a while I made a mistake adopting her but it was really worth the effort.

Good Luck with yours!!

cats can misbehave if your constantly around them. they are very independant and like their own personal space. also if you treat this cat badly they might misbehave more. i have a cat called charlie and i spoil him rotten. but now when i play with him he tends to try and bite me. if this happens to you smack him slightly as if he is a naughty child. if he carries on smack him slightly harder he should get the point.

She really wants your attention. My baby girl cat also bites me, I am not sure why but its something she is not doing as much of as she gets older.

Because it's a cat, you have to train them like you do a dog, except it generally takes longer because...well it's a cat.

Try Playing with your cat; string, ball, torch light, etc

Cats will spar with other cats in the wild, they need it.

Cats don't see us as being different to them, therefore your cat sees you as a big ole boring putty-tatt...

Because it is a cat and by nature they are contrary and independant.
If you want the cat to come, it will go.
If you want the cat to meow, it will be quiet.
If you want the cat to snuggle, it will not.

Gotta love em huh? LOL
