Restore will put the system back to where it was. You will have to run Windows Update again which is no big deal.
Just to clarify "restore" is a part of Windows which takes you back to a time you select when it worked OK. "Recovery" is a disk/s supplied by the manufacturer of the computer that puts it back to where it was at the time of shipping.

Yes, you lose the updates. If you do the hard restore or recovery where you go to factory settings you need to do the following. First, you need to load the antispyware first. This prevents any trojans, especially, from sneaking on board. TWO you need to download the windows updates. You can do it manually. Or if you turn your automatic updates on, the computer will do it for you and on your bottom bar you will notice an update icon there. Just put your cursor on it and it will tell you how many percent of the download it has done. You can work on your computer but check every five minutes on the update icon on your bar (or on your update window, if downloading manually) or on the update window, and when they are ready for download, then download them. Another trick is to go to the TURN OFF THE COMPUTER window. While downloading, your download icon on the bottom bar may say 40%. Go START. then TURN OFF THE COMPUTER, and in that window you TURN OFF. You may notice an icon there saying you can download. You do not need a 100% on bar icon to download. An icon on the TURN OFF indicates you may do a partial download. Then when machine is rebooted it starts downloading again, and you go back and forth till you are downloaded. Normally, it is on the TURN OFF part. Sometimes, My Symantec spyware on some days get viruses hitting me a couple times a day. So as soon as it is ready to down load I stop, hit the TURN OFF THE COMPUTER, wait, reboot, and start again.. I got DSL speed now and now it only takes a couple of hours. But then this depends on how fast your downloading is. Also, make your recovery disc too, in case something happens. Instructions there explain this. Also, you can order the Windows XP SP2 disc, for under $2.
